A 13 year old boy at the school I work at approached me yesterday. This is how the conversation went.

JAMES: I need to talk to you. Can I shut the door? It's personal.
ME: Of course James. What's wrong?
JAMES: Deputy, is it true that you bake cakes?
ME: Yes. Why?
JAMES: Well, Carli's birthday is June 6th, and I want to buy her a cake.
ME: Do you like Carli?
JAMES: Not that much. No.
ME: oooooh. Ok. Cuz it sounds like you do. So, what kind of cake do you want?
JAMES: She likes chocolate, so all chocolate. And write, "Happy Birthday from James." Don't make the cake or the words too big though. I only have $10.
ME: Ok. I'll see what I can do.

JAMES: Thanks Dep. You're the best. And remember, I'm on a budget.

How can I say no to young love? Of course I'm not going to take his money.

This is so sweet! What a lucky girl to have a boy like that with a crush on her! Thanks for sharing the story. I hope you'll post pics of the cake.

That is such a nice story and I think it shows how caring most people that are deputy's and fireman are. I have 3 that are officers and when I make a new recipe or make extra of some dessert I take it down to the fire station nearest to us. I tell them that I do it because I know how under appreciated they are as public servants (?) and besides, I need some guinea pigs. They tell me they will be my guinea pigs anytime I want.

I was originally going to make an 8" round with chocolate icing and the wording, but now I'm thinking I may go all out for him and do a giant cupcake. I have the pan, but I've never done the fondant on it. Does anyone know how I fondant the two separate parts?

Now I don't know aout fondant, but I have done the cc pan with chocolate candy melts before to make the 'wrapper' then just ice & decorate the top, works well icon_smile.gif

I was just reading about that on another post, but it seems a little confusing.

Aw, that's a great story! Maybe a mom with boys this age can weigh in further, but from the way you described him he seems pretty low key. Your heart is in the right place with wanting to go all out, but if the cake is too elaborate, it might embarrass him. I'd do something super-fancy-delicious, but more on the simple side when it comes to decorating.

Thanks for starting my day off right with this story. icon_smile.gif

Okay.. that is the sweetest thing!! I do agree that the bigger cake might embarrass him... Personally, I really liked your course 3 cake.. the chocolate with pink roses. Something like that would be so beautiful icon_biggrin.gif
