Honestly, looking back now, I would take the gumpaste one. Cause everything you learn in class 3 you can learn just from this site.

But I am basing this solely on the fact that I want to learn gum paste, and would learn it better in a class type atmosphere. I can't seem to "get it" from just reading and seeing examples online.

This is just my opinion.

I wish they offered GP classes here!!! icon_cry.gificon_cry.gificon_cry.gif

I enjoyed all the Wilton classes. I like to be shown how to do things not just read how. It was nice to be shown how to do some of the royal icing flowers. And it got my "feet wet" as far as fondant went. I would add that I wish there was a gumpaste class available for me to take. I would take all the classes I could if they were available.

I didn't take class 3 due to a lack of funds at the time. Looking back now I don't think it would have made much difference. Maybe have learned a few other flowers that I probably don't use now anyway. I would love to take a gum paste class. I do agree that being shown something is easier than reading about it. Here is a picture of my first wedding cake though the picture doesn't do it any justice. Not to mention I ended up in the ER from it a day later. ( severe muscle and tendon strain ) I had Carpal tunnel surgery done a year later. I guess the best advice I can give is DOWEL DOWEL DOWEL

this is a toughie... I am finishing up course three this week... and I have enjoyed it... the gift cake was a really great intro to fondant I thought.

but I have been thinking all along that I wish we were learning gumpaste. My instructor has never worked with gumpaste.. so I know that's not gonna happen. icon_lol.gif

SO if I had to pick one or the other based on $$ restraints... I would go for the gumpaste and buy the course 3 book on ebay and teach yourself. icon_smile.gif

I have to say I loved course 3 but wish I could take a gumpaste class. I live so far from anywhere that it's almost impossible. They offered one in Memphis, but that's 2.5 hours away and it was once a week for 4 or 5 weeks. There was just no way I could do it. As it was, I had to drive at least an hour each way to do each of the wilton courses. I was scared to death to try fondant and just as scared to do a stacked cake, so I was really glad to take the course 3.

I didn't take class 3 from Wilton and I am doing fine with fondant.

I would rather invest in gumpaste... However, I do prefer the look of natural flowers but sometimes making flowers out of gumpaste or other things may come in handy... icon_biggrin.gif

i've taken both wilton 3 course and the gum paist class. if money were an issue, then i would use a coupon and buy the wilton course book, which isnt that much and i would take the gum paste class. gum paste flowers are beautiful and really hard to learn on your own, i would think.
look at my photos and see the gum paste flowers i just did in my course.
now, the wilton course (here anyway) is divided up into two classes, or courses. but, if each class is $25.00 then your only spending $50.00 for something that not many people even know how to do, so you could market your skills.
i've taken the first part and will take the second part later in the year.
good luck with which ever you decide!

I haven't taken either one yet (I start Wilton class II tomorrow) but I think if I had to choose, I would take the gumpaste class. Much more difficult to learn, I would think, and what a value that knowledge would be to any cake business, especially if you do wedding cakes!

Lucky me, I've gotten my first 2 Wilton classes at Michael's for only $12.50 each, and I'm hoping to take a gum paste class at a local cake shop. I think the cost is $50, so I guess I need to sell a couple of cakes before then to pay for it!

psurrette your cake is lovely and almost worth the trip to the E.R., well not to you, but it surely looks gorgeous!
Well, I haven't taken either course or any Wilton course or gumpaste course for that matter, but I think you can learn gumpaste quite easily on your own, so I would go for the Wilton 3 course instead.
