I've never used an airbrush before but I'm asking for one for my birthday and I wanted to know if anyone had any recommendations for which kind I should get. I found this one on Amazon that had good reviews but only 15 of them, so not sure how much stock I should put into that.

What do you think? And where to you get the pearl color that makes the cakes shimmery? Does that work in any airbrush?

I have recently been wondering the same thing. The one you sent a link to looks good to me.

I ordered one from Eastwood company on ebay last week.. it came, I couldn't figure out how to use it, I broke it, and sent it back. Here is what I learned. You definitely want a gravity feed for the color.. the one I got had the color holder thing underneath which had to suck up the color and it just didn't work. I couldn't get my hand around it anyway so it just sucked all around. My husband ordered me a new one that looks a lot like the one you pictured, so hopefully it will be better. Duff also came out with one at Michaels, and you could use a 40 or 50 off coupon!

For the shimmery look you can buy Americolor SHEEN colors.

I have this one
http://www.airbrushcity.com/144AC.htm
and I love it, its not heavy and easy to work, it was part of a kit on this site, think the site is closed for holiday or something, but I got this compressor and two cake pens...one plastic http://airbrushcity.com/1404nh.htm and one I use all the time that I love and is metal and cost about 80.00-100.00
http://www.airbrushcity.com/gd100.htm and all the hosing with it....I also got it for my birthday and my DH paid like 190.00 with shipping and cost of airbrush. Ive had it now for 3yrs and love it!!!

But buy it in the combo kit, all together not seperate

Bekabean, thats the exact one i have and it is great!!! make sure you read up on how to care for it, but for someone who doesnt do Monet paintings with my airbrush, its perfect. Color cupcakes and cakes all over, or do some finer work with it. I usually use it for airbrushing shimmer (get the extra colors plus the shimmer colors with it!!!) but I have also painted swirls with it. JUST LOVE IT!
