I made a batch of gum paste last night for the first time. Today when I started to try color and form the base for a rose it seems too dry. How can I make it moist without making it sticky?

You might try adding some crisco shortening and work it in. I'm not sure, but it could work.. I always use Crisco with the pre-made Wilton gum paste and it makes it more pliable without getting gummy.
