Review - Babycakes Cake Pop Maker
Baking By FromScratchSF Updated 13 May 2012 , 1:40am by unctoothlady
I bought 3 of the makers and I have to say I am really disappointed-they are very, very tiny and if you don't get the exact precise amount in each little well, they turn out lopsided and not completely round. I had such high hopes for these as so many people can't stand the density of cake pops but I just wish these could be a bit larger and there could be an easier way to get them out of the wells too. Total bummer. :*(
I'm curious, cake pops are not popular in my area, in fact I don't know of anyplace where I can get them besides Starbucks. Many of you have said this machine makes "tiny" balls, but I have nothing to compare them to since they are bigger then the Starbucks balls!
The Babycakes balls are 1.5" and weigh about 1/2 an oz. To me that's about the size and weight of one of my unfrosted mini cupcakes. Can someone please post what size you think is typical, accepted or what you make for a cake pop to help comparison? Size and weight would be awesome.
Thanks,
Jen
I thought the Starbucks cake pops are also 1.5", but I could be wrong. I've tried them but forgot to measure them! I think once you put the chocolate on the BabyCakes ones, they get as big as the Starbucks.
There's a picture here of someone holding them.

Of course there is one rolled in marshmallows and nuts which looks bigger than the others.
Mine just arrived today, so happy, cannot wait to try it. I ordered 2 of them from Kohl online, it's on sale for $19.99. I also used the 20% coupon plus free shipping for order more than $75.00.
I went to order one on kohls.com and they were already out
But one of my local stores had one in stock so it's on hold and I will be picking it up later today
Here are more of my pops. These are not naked...coconut and pecans! Yum!

For those of you that have called Kohl's.. you might check in. I three stores and all said they did not have them... two even "checked"...but I had some time and was near one that said they checked and did not have any and lo and behold... they had a whole stack.. I really like mine.. using the piping bag to fill the cavities is key also... you get an idea of exactly how much to get just the right size.. Have fun
I'm getting mine for Mother's day...
We went to kohl's and found them so my DH and kids bought it for me and the donut maker...We did check the boxes and they are complete.
I'm so anxious to use them...
I'll be posting my review later...
Thanks for the heads up on checking the box, imaginthatnj, and I had already done so because I, too, read on here about parts not being there. Everything was in the box, thank goodness! And thanks for the good wishes for my dad. He seems to be doing much better, but they're going to keep him in an adult care facility for another week. He's still too weak to go home from what they said. He's 84, so it's slow and steady for recuperation.
Has anyone seen this in Canada yet?
I make the worst cake balls so I'm hoping this is the magic product !!!

I just bought a Starbucks one to measure and weigh. I only had my tape measure so I wrapped it around and it's 5" all around. Of course Starbucks' pops are not totally round. They're not as perfect as someone from CC would make them. The weight is 1.25 oz. I always assumed it would be a lot heavier than a BabyCakes one because it's condensed cake plus frosting.
I tried the machine today, I'm a little disappointed because the balls are so tiny compare to the one I usually make. I like my "Nostalgia Donut Hole Maker" better, it produce bigger cake balls, a little too big though, but I think it's better. I bought 3 babycakes machines my sister doesn't want it after she saw the result. Well since I already use it, I'll keep mine, I can use it if I want to make small balls someday, but will return the other 2 unused ones.

They are still selling those hole makers, if you need one:

i just got my cake pop machine last week and I love it! its so easy to use they come out so easy. My family absolutely loved them. It my hubby's birthday and he already requested i make him some
Just want to chime in... picked my second one up at Kohls yesterday, onsale for $19.99 + the $10 off coupon + the extra 30% off... came to a little over 6 bucks! Snap!
Did my first batch with second machine and they stuck a little, my first machine didnt... uh oh.
All in all, I love the machines... you get actual bites of baked cake and not mush... like the ones I had at Starbucks earlier this week.
Are those the ones in your photos? They're really nice!
Did you use the same recipe on the first batch as on the second batch with the newer machine?
I got mine for mothers day and just used it yesterday, here's my review:
1. I used te recipe for vanilla cake pops that came with the machine. I measured 1 tbsp of batter with a small scoop, but it wasn't enough dough to reach the top so muy first batch came looking like little eggs. But I also found that using the scoop takes longer time to fill the cavities that using a disposable decorating bag. So I'm sticking to the decorating bag and filling the lower cavities a little more than full.
2. The lid of the machine has a little wiggle, I'm guessing it's for letting the dough rise properly, but some of my pops were crooked, the top half sliding to one side the bottom half to the other.
3. It was easier to coat with the candy melts than with the cake balls made with frosting. The last time I made them a lot of them cracked, This time none of them did.
4. These pops are more sturdy than my frosting+cake balls.
5. They are a little drier and less sweet than the forsting+cake balls.
I really like this method better, I baked them in less time than it took me to roll the frosting+cake balls, I love my little machines and will keep on using them. I'll be offering cake balls (only cake) and cake truffles (cake+frosting) in my business.
Is the Babycake pop machine available at Kohls in the different pastel colors?
There's a color for each different type of dessert. The pop maker doesn't come in different pastel colors, it's lilac.

Thank you, Solecito. I bought 3 of them and haven't had time to try them yet (just for home, so I'm not pressed for them). Every person's review will help when I do try them.
To Imagenthatnj... it was a different recipe, so that may have been some of the problem... I will repeat my first recipe and see what happens... and yes, the pics in my profile were my first attempt at cakepops... and everyone loved that they werent mushy!
To Wesha... I received a sale ad in the mail last week indicating that the maker was going back on sale this week and they had a peel off sticker to see if you would get an additional 15, 20 or 30% off any item. (they also have scratch off ones in the store right now) I then received a couple days later one of their $10 off anything in the store cards attached to a postcard type advertisement... The stars dont usually align so well for me as this did.

A friend of mine just made some using her machine, last night, lime cake; she said execution was flawless and that she loved it that they were not mushy. Up till yesterday, she had made them the other way. One thing I like is that they are very round and uniform. She did say that they were smaller than what she's used to. Maybe they should come up with a medium machine! I might get to try mine this weekend.
I thought theywere a pretty good size once I double dipped mine in white chocolate...bigger than Starbucks... I like that they are really uniform too.
And Lime cake...YUM!
Does anyone know how to get the pops perfectly round. I keep trying and I keep getting pops that are round on the bottom and flatter on the top. I have tried 2 cake mixes and a cake mix doctor recipe that has sour cream in it. The babycakes website days it works with cake mixes. I know it isn't the machine. I tried pancakes and brownies and got perfectly round balls. So... It must be the batter or something I am doing. What kind of recipe do you use to get round balls? Thanks!!!
I tried mine for the first time yesterday with a box mix, and couldn't dip the balls (even after freezing them) without them falling off the stick. I think the texture of the cake is too soft when u use a mix. I agree with those who suggest using a denser recipe.
Also, I couldn't get the hang of making them perfectly round. One side was always a little flatter. What's the trick?
you should dip the stick in chocoalte befor putting it in the pop
Oh, I did do that, motherofgrace. I never had any problem with the "other way" of doing it. But I'm determined to get this right, cuz I like the idea of cake rather than cake mixed with icing. Although, that does taste good too!!
