This thread sort of surprised me. Didn't realize there were so many strong feelings one way or another. As I said, tough crowd! icon_wink.gif

I guess I am amazed at how critical people can be when it is someone elses work they are critiquing. Try that sort of stuff on here and the fur would really fly!!! icon_surprised.gificon_lol.gif

I think we all have room for improvement, even the "experts". I love the challenges on TFN...it gives me insight into the contestants. They are human just like the rest of us. They make mistakes, just like we do. They may get paid much more for their work but at the end of the day they aren't much different than the rest of us.

I applaud anyone who has success at what they love to do. icon_biggrin.gif

I'm not close to be as good as Kate Sullivan or anyone here at CC but I have an 8 year old and two year old and a 3 month old and it is very hard to make a cake and little people wanting to eat cake and icing while you're doing it. My son took a whole cake from the counter than I learned my lesson I have to do it when they are sleeping or do it slowly while they nap, I think Kate does a very good job she is just very lucky to get the exposure some of us may want, darn she's lucky!!! I do think she can hurt her back carrying her son around all day but if she thinks is hard making a cake with one baby man!! try 3 .She should introduce her son to Barney. I love her cakes they are very cute and at the challenge at least she didn't drop her cake like Duff he drops everything!! but Duff does great art on his cakes! Well we are not all perfect and we all have our weaknesses. She deserves a break she is brave and she will improve.

Okay, well kudos to those who have 2 , 3 or more kids and can get anything done....but that was your choice. Kate shouldn't be scorned because she "only has one" and has "been lucky" in her achieved success nonetheless. There are endless barriers in this world beyond having kids at your feet sticking fingers in your work. That's my point.

Why isn't Duff criticized for getting a "lucky break" and having no kids running around his studio?

lol, well, I also " WORE" my son for almost 2 years..it was easier than putting him down and "losing" him.

He was hyperactive, but for some reason, when he was riding high he was relaxed!..

I dont' care what anyone says..we all can learn from a great designer, a good designer or a terrible designer...

and why is it that when people express an opinion just a little bit stronger than most (maybe that's just their personality coming through..) people get all bent ?

We are all adults, we have opinions, no one is saying anything that is untrue..YES..in her book her sugar flowers are nicked, the work is not extraordinary..but..

The reason I purchased the book when I did...was the FBCT..that was before I got back here and it was all over cake central.

Sure, when I thumbed through the book..I saw the big gaps between her stars or dots or however she calls it...but I also saw "POTENTIAL" to make the new "technique" my own!!!

Yes, we have CC'er that can do a lot better..we also have some that do a lot worse..

Doesn't matter...we all have an opinion, some of us (me included..lol) have less finess than others in expressing it!

lol!!!

Sorry to get off the subject, but this is a question about the cakes from the original post .... Are they all cake dummies or real cakes? They are all gorgeous and I am just wondering if it's really cake or styrofoam. (sp?) icon_confused.gif :

I love her style of cakes, I think they are really fun, creative, and unique - her book is both inspirational and informative. Sure perhaps there are others here that create more clean work, perhaps even more creative work - AND GOOD FOR THEM TOO!
I really don't know why so many threads here have to turn nasty, especially when it comes to discussing the success of others in the field.
Kate Sullivan - having one kid or 20, working from home or in a store front, having connections or working the pavement, getting paid $9.00/serving or $2.50, having a book published on merit or because she has connections -
WHO CARES? And why must it turn into a major debate as to whether or not SHE DESERVES any of it?
God forbid you become successful - others will always want to knock you down!

I don't think I said that she never deserved anything. I was pointing out that she sold her cakes for $9.00 a serve. As far as working at home or having a store front the question was brought up about legal or not. Some of us bake in fear-Not me but others do fear that they will get busted. So I was wondering if she was legal or not??

Lets ask this ---Do you like all they cakes that you see?? Have you ever looked at something and thought not my taste?

I didn't think I was pointing the finger at anyone in particular - there were many comments made by many people, not a single individual.

And no, I don't like every cake I see. Many times I look at something and say - nope that's not for me or not my style. BUT that's all I say....I don't break it down bit by bit to explain WHY I don't like it - unless I was asked. AND I can still appreciate the work involved and talent of the creator without liking it.

Let's not beat this to death. I just posted the original post with the thought that some of you might like to watch this show. We all have a right to our opinions or feelings, but let's not attack anyone while doing it. Can we all play nice now?
Say goodnight Gracie. icon_biggrin.gif

I saw the show too. Looked up her book and read the comments. Very similar to those here. I liked the fact that her cakes weren't perfect, but then upon closer examination, DEFINATELY weren't perfect for a book! I was so happy watching the show to see her succeed until I also heard of her magazine friend. Don't we all wish we had one! Then the rest of the show set my sights on her son. How dangerous was that when she kept bending over in the oven with her son on her back????? And to be on there all day like she said.....he probably thinks his mom looks like 'Cousin It' from the Adams Family show, only seeing the back of her head! Whether we are professional or baking for fun, we've all made sacrifices to be with our children and I think she should have postponed the business for a few more years. Didn't look like she was getting too much help from hubby and for someone struggling, was able to hire out the baking! Ah, the rough life of money!

It's my understanding that the actual baking of cakes must be done in a commercial kitchen, but the decorating of the cake is considered a "craft" and does not have to be done in a commercial kitchen.

We are all adults, we have opinions, no one is saying anything that is untrue.

I have found that any negativity or critical honesty is severely frowned upon here. Everything said has got to be sugary sweet, even if it's untrue (case in point: the picture comment committee). C'est la vie. icon_smile.gif

The picture comment committee is not about providing false positive feedback . Please get your facts straight before making irresponsible posts like this.

Additionally, yes negativity is frowned upon here. There is enough negative stuff in our daily lives, CC is supposed to be a sanctuary away from that stuff, a place where you can find comfort and support.

If anyone doesn't like that policy, they know where the "door" is...

I am locking this thread. If anyone has a problem with the policies or mission of CC, feel free to contact me...
