Square Buttercream Dots For On A Wedding Cake

I know I can make square dots with fondant but my bride would like square dots from buttercream. Any ideas on how I can accomplish that. Perhaps freezing buttercream and then cutting it in to dots but they would be flat.

You could pipe them directly on the cake using a flat tip (like the smooth side of a basketweave tip), or make a stencil and spread them on.

I would pipe them and let them dry (how you would with buttercream roses).
