Ok, i have a recipe for a red velvet cake. It calls for a mixture of baking soda and vinegar. Well it has baked for the recommended time plus some. It has basically blew up in my oven. What went wrong, now all three cakes are deflated and very minimum cake batter is left in the pan... Please help Sad
It calls for a mixture of baking soda and vinegar.
Elaborate on this please - does the recipe call for you to mix the bs and vinegar together prior to adding it to the batter, or is it just two ingredients in the batter?
Theresa
Yes the recipe called for the two to be mixed together prior to putting it into the batter
I also saw that in other recipes online. Apparently, the mixture over-reacted for some reason. Can you please post just the ingredients, so I can try to figure this out? Thanks.
Theresa
Sure, there are as follows:
Cake:
* 2 cups sugar
* 1/2 pound (2 sticks) butter, at room temperature
* 2 eggs
* 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
* 2 ounces red food coloring
* 2 1/2 cups cake flour
* 1 teaspoon salt
* 1 cup buttermilk
* 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
* 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
* 1 tablespoon vinegar
And your instructions say to stir the vinegar and baking soda together, then add it in at the end, right before you pan the batter?
