Gardenia cake in my portfolio (just posted this weekend) had a 4" square top tier. Cut the board from a 6" round. Then used bubble tea straws to support.

I did this as well, I don't use SPS at all on any cake, doweling works just fine for me. The pic is in my photos, the 4 tier quinceanera cake - offset square.
