Making A Giant Cupcake Without The Giant Cupcake Pan

I was asked to make a giant cupcake but don't want to purchase the pan right now. I was thinking I could just do a couple of 6in layers and use 1/2 of the ball pan to make the top.....has anyone ever tried this?? Or do you think it would work?? They just want it to take babies first birthday pics with....so it will be smashed anyway
