how do i make a pleated design on a cake? should i cover the whole cake first with fondant then do the pleated pattern? or use the pleats to directly cover the cake?

for the wedding cake and sample cake i did i covered it first then cut strips of fondant and pleated it...it seemed much simpler that way....hope that helps!

I have tried both ways..if you plan to pleat the entire tier I suggest that you place pleat directly on cake. make sure you cover it completely as to not show the cake underneath. Dont skimp on the fondant.

Most cakes I have seen cover teh cake in fondant, then place the pleats on that. Since most pleats will be made out of 50-50, I'd rather have people eat actually fondant, and not the 50-50.

thanks everyone.. I just finished the cake with pleated design.. what i did was cover the cake with fondant the put the pleats on,, it worked that way..thanks...il post a picture of this cake..
