I have looked everywhere to try and find this out. These deserts are popping up all over the place and they look so awesome, but I can't find how to make them. Anyone have any ideas. Here is a cake that has what I am talking about.

I have seen this done on a food network show. You would line a sheet pan or cookie sheet with a silpat liner (Nothing sticks to silpat.. it is expensive but everyone says its worth every penny) You place a stencil on the silpat and cover the stencil with a THIN layer of white cake batter. Lift off the stencil (very carefully). Pour in a layer, again thin, of chocolate cake batter. Bake the cake.. when it is done turn it out onto a parchment lined board. When cool cut into strips that will fit around the cake you want to cover. I think you would also put a thin layer of frosting or jam on the side of the cake to hold the cake strip on.

This can also be done with a cocoa butter printed acetate sheet and melted chocolate.

I don't have a picture unfortunately but one technique I learned in culinary school was what our text called ribbon sponge. It was colouring bits of cake batter (usually 2 colours) then fingerpainting your silpat lined baking sheet all messy and swirly (not so much that the colours blend thou) then covering with coating of regular cake batter and baking. Then cut strips and use as outer layer of cake (use cake rings to help you build.
