How does everyone store their cookie cutters? I seem to be collecting alot of these, presently I have them in clear plastic boxes. I sort them by holidays, season, etc. but..........still a mess and always have to look thru the pile! Any suggestions would help.
Here is something I've been wanting to do, trace cookie cutters on a sheet of paper by theme (might need several sheets for each theme) you might also repeat a cutter for several themes. Number the cutter outlines and place the cutter in the corresponding numbered box. I like the idea of being able to look at the cutter shapes in a convenient binder without having to pull out the box of cutters, I have so many cutters I forget what I even have. At the moment I use a dresser with very shallow drawers meant for blueprints but I still can't find what I want as fast as I would like.
my cake store has them nailed to the wall (the cutters hang on the nails), that might work in a closet or something..
Montrealconfections, I like your idea. I have even been known to buy duplicates (don't tell my hubby) since I don't remember what I have.
I keep mine in clear plastic shoe-size boxes (the storage boxes you can get at Target, etc.). I label each and sort the cutters into boxes by theme.
I keep them on hooks on pegboard like they have them at the cake decorating store where I buy them. If you don't have wall space, you can put up the pegboard on the back of a pantry or closet door. Then you can print out little labels to put on the board so you can see what is what.
My husband built me the Wall O' Cookie Cutters, using a peg board. It's in the storage room, so the picture isn't the best but it gives you an idea.
I've got it organized right now with basic shapes (hearts, squares, diamonds, letters) along the top, the middle has separate rows for animals, transportation, sports, etc., and then along the bottom with room to grow up is the holidays.
And you can get different lengths of pegs, if you have the same cutter in different sizes, you can put them all on the same peg.
I have hundreds of cookie cutters, and I still have plenty of room to grow! I love it!
I am so jealous of that peg board. I too have hundreds of cutters in plastic drawers with lists per drawer and a master list. I am going to get a peg board...

Oh Goodness. this is the coolest cookie cutter storage I've seen so far. I would love to have it. I was going to lay out my bags of cookie cutters and take some photos so I wouldn't have to search through all the bags to remember what I already had bought.
And I searched the storage thread.......found this.....WOW just wish I had some room for it.
Given that I only have two cookie cutters that I actually use (the integral sign for shortbreads, and the backwards eighth-note for Scandinavian gingersnaps [which works out rather convenient, since they're so thin, it's safer to flip them onto the cookie sheet, rather than slide them, thereby putting the head, stem, and flag in the correct relative positions]), they just live in my silverware drawer.
Oh, and then there's that set of alphabet cookie cutters. They just live in a plastic bag, in a kitchen drawer.
I have no system of storage...just cookie cutters in a box ! I'm forever buying duplicates...cause I can't remember what I own..thanks for the many ideas. I am going to get organized in the New Year !
I know this sounds odd, but I got large clear gallon ziplock bags, put a piece of cut out cereal box ( a flat piece smaller than the bag) to stiffen it up. Then put 6 to 8 cutters in the bag. The bags are sitting in a big tub, so I can scan through each bag like a card file. (For those of you who remember card filing.)
I can go through the box pretty quickly and look at every single cutter without making a mess, and STILL I buy duplicates. I wrote down, and measured the different sizes of cutters once. (star 3", 4", 6" ) and I still get excited at a sale and buy one. Oh well. It's a collection that is appreciated, if nothing else. Cookies are a joy.
I was going to photograph the bags, as you can see each cutter. My eye can see each cutter, but I found out today that the human eye is an incredible miracle.
The camera sees light reflecting off the bags........I'd have to empty every bag and photograph. Never mind. Gave up today.
I use scrapbook containers that I buy on sale at Michaels or Joannes. I put a single layer of cutters in, then cover them with a piece of poster board cut to fit and layer another set of cutters over that. When the lid is closed I can see all the cutters on one side of the poster board. They stack easy as well. Below is a photo of how easy I can see the top layer. I can easily flip the container over to see the bottom layer. They also don't get all jumbled and it keeps the cutting edges from getting damaged.
