I am looking to make a mushroom cake, and would like to know if 1/2 a sportsball cake (Wilton) could be placed on a double layer 4 inch round without any VISABLE support?

Yes. The sports ball will have to be on a board, but you can cover the bottom of the board with fondant or icing.
