I am making a cake for a friend who does not want a fondant cake but would like the look of the pearl dust on buttercream. I have heard that pearl dust only works with fondant so does anyone know of a way I can get that same shimmer effect or will the pearl dust work?

I airbrush the dust on the cakes. You mix some dust with vodka or clear rum, then airbrush. I keep a container on hand premixed, just shake and it is ready.

Not sure if you can brush the dust all over the cake. Does your frosting crust, you might try a fluffy powder brush (the make up kind) might help better then the small paint brush.

You can dry brush pearl dust very gently on a well-crusted buttercream but you need to be delicate about it. Use a large fluffy brush, like a buki brush. Airbrushing is much easier.
