Not sure if I should use rice krispie treat and bc w/ rolled fondant or modeling chocolate or just buy the characters...fo paux..i know! So anyone have any great ideas let me know. I do fondant pretty well. gonna freeze my cake to decorate. ideas on water, sand (brown sugar?) etc....any ideas would be great and I will post pics when done by the creation of everyone's ideas.

For sand, you could also crush some vanilla wafers.

For the sand on my Sky and Ocean cake I used brown sugar. I really like the look.

Unless you are planning to make really large figures, I would just use fondant/gum paste to make the figures. Also, here's a link to a Nemo cake I really like. I know you are doing 3D figures, but I thought it might give you some inspiration for the background sealife.
