I made my first edible image cake over the weekend. (I will post the picture soon). It turned out great. The only question I have is this: When I cut the cake, the image didn't stick to the icing, it came off as I was cutting. I thought the frosting sheets were supposed to "melt" into the icing. I got my icing sheets from KopyKake. Is this a normal thing or do some icing sheets stick better than other? I also didn't really like the taste either.
Thanks for the advice!
Michele
If you used a crusting icing, you have to apply the image ASAP after smoothing the top. Once it starts crusting, the image will just sit on top and not blend with the buttercream. There's a really fine line between damp enough and too damp. If the icing is really soft, like IMBC or something similar, I get a lot of bleeding after six or eight hours. If it's too firm, you get the "sitting on top" situation. I've started using a crusting icing that takes a long time to start crusting. Kind of a happy medium. That seems to be working for me. But, it's a challenge. As "easy" as these things are....there are certainly some "issues."
I think the image looks like the frosting below is coming through because you used a colored icing. I always use white icing when I use an edible image. If you want a colored icing I would just use an outline around the image or even lay the image on a piece of fondant first.
I put the image on as soon as I finished icing the cake. That is why I was confused as to why it didn't form into the icing. This was my first one so maybe I just need practice. I like the idea of putting in on fondant first. That makes sense!!! Thank you both!
