Smooth Edges

I made this cake for my kids this weekend. I used the viva paper towel method, but the edges were a bit lumpy. Is this because there is to much frosting?

Here is a perfect opportunity to get a Sugarshack DVD. The techniques taught in that lesson are wonderful. You can have it explained to you all day long in here, but investing in a visual aid like hers, is totally worth the money.

Basically, you have too much frosting on the top of your tier, and you need to get rid of it before you start to smooth.

Invest in a nice bench scraper, without a handle. Bash n Chop can be found at Bed Bath and Beyond for like $5.

A drywall knife works great too, that's what I use.

this is exactly what i use too...and i haven't had any problem since.

it also seems like your icing is not stiff enough. icon_confused.gif

I dunno, I like to work with a fairly soft icing...pulls up less crumbs and easier to smooth for me.
