Yeah, I want nothing to do with anything that you can get (looks style) from a grocery/big box store. Ya know, a bakery worker at one of those stores couldn't even tell me if they used fondant when I asked the other day. And I only asked because one of their display cakes clearly had fondant on it. Ummmm, I know you may not have ever worked with fondant before, but you work in a bakery. You gotta know enough to be able to answer that question. You either roll out a sugary dough mixture and cover a cake with it or not. Really!
I have a minimum of $200 for wedding cakes and $40 for occasional cakes (which I'm considering upping).
Not that this helps you, but I also don't offer sheet cakes and I tell people that right up front. Not only do I not enjoy doing them, but it keeps away the riff-raff. Sorry if that sounds crass but it seems when people want a sheet cake-style cake from a "cake maker", they expect a better than supermarket cake but want to pay the same price as the crappy supermarket cake! Besides, there's a woman that lives right down the road from me that has been doing beautifual sheet cakes for years and I'm more than happy to send her the business -- she's doesn't like to do wedding cakes so it also works in the reverse!!
I agree it all make sense now. WE dont want to compete with the foodstore and our time and talent is more precious than a $50 cake order. By offering a minimum order you are creating a niche market for yourself which is better. I will be considering and will be increasing my prices and NO SHEEET cakes for me anymore. Go to the foodstore they have lots! IMO
Question, Do you charge the same price for wedding and birthday cake if its 2 tier (buttercream and fondant). Technically is the serving is the same regardless. Whats your thoughts on this?
