I finally decided on a theme for my son's 3rd birthday. We did Elmo and Big Bird last year and he's still into Sesame Street. I really didn't want to do Sesame Street again and the only other thing I could think of was M&M's since that's his favorite treat. We also have a huge collection of M&M stuff. We're going to Las Vegas the week before his birthday and going to hit the M&M store too so I hope I can find more party stuff there.

Anyway, I'm in search of ideas for his cake. One idea was to do the egg-shaped pan standing on end and frosting it yellow and doing the M logo like the peanut guy. Then I could roll fondant or something and shape it for legs and arms. The other idea is just doing a half sheet with a buttercream transfer of the M&M characters. I'd probably do a border with the real things too. (Large star with mini's on each)

Does anyone have any other ideas?

This is a M & M cake I did with BCT one of my first attempts but it may give you an idea.

I like the 3-D idea. If you needed more cake you could do one in the egg pan and one in the ball pan and do a plain and a peanut shaped m & m!

Here is an M&M i did out of cupcakes. This one is 24. I've also done the blue one and I think I used like 30 cupcakes to get the longer shape.

You guys are awesome! I love the BCT. That's what I was envisioning for a 2nd cake! Now I'm debating the ball pan for a plain one though....I do have that pan and it hasn't been used yet! I'd have to trim it down though to get the true shape of an M&M (or Emmy, as Grant would say). I still have almost two months, but with our trip being the week before his birthday (tagging along with Daddy's business trip) and having to order the egg pan, I figured I'd get cracking on ideas!

On more question...Do you use a pound cake for the 3-D pans? I've never done a stand up 3-D pan before. Well, one that actually stood up anyway!

I've never used pound cake in mine and they've turned out fine. You can check in my pics to see what i've made using the ball pan.

Hey Kelly, I've done a few 3D cakes and haven't used any pound cake mixtures. I use just regular cake mixes except I substitute milk for the water...it gives my cakes a little more texture...just enough to handle being 3D.

Maybe it's just the bowling pin then. I made that and it collapsed. But I was using a pretty moist recipe- from the Cake Mix Doctor. These aren't so thin so maybe they'll hold up better. I'll probably experiment anyway. Thanks for the help!
