The Great Scratch-Off...chocolate Cakes!
Decorating By artscallion Updated 18 Aug 2009 , 11:22pm by CakesByLJ
I've been studying, studying, studying.....so no time for baking, baking, baking.
I do appreciate everyone else's work though and will certainly give the top couple of recipes a try. I'll be back to baking in August, so I'll join back in for that run.
It doesn't look like anyone has volunteered to tabulate the results yet. I haven't been getting notifications on this thread so I had to catch up on a couple of pages of posts. I'm not sure why that keeps happening to some people. Maybe it's been the recent work to the site? Anyhow, if no one has volunteered to tally up the results, I'd be willing even though I'm not super versed in spreadsheets. I hear there's one already to go? Let me know... ![]()

Sorry it has taken me so long to respond to request for a tabulator. I've been MIA.
I couldn't locate the final spreadsheet on my computer but I have since found it. If no one else wants to tabulate the results, I can do it but it will have to wait until Friday, August 7th. I see that CountryCakery and Ceshell also volunteered. Just let me know......
Also...what is next month's Scratch-Off going be? I may sit this one out but I'd like to follow the tread...depending on what flavor will be tested.
This has been an awesome Scratch-Off experience over the past two months. I've had fun testing and reading all the critiques of the various recipes. Thanks to CakeandDazzle for initiating the Scratch-Off. It was great idea
.
ceshell, if you would pm me that spreadsheet (if you can find it) I would be happy to give it a try. I've never done this before so I may ask the odd question as I'm not ordinarily a numbers person!
Hopefully it's not too hard to figure out!
I've got some free time tomorrow to have a look at it so if you're able to pass it on then great! Unless you find it and then are suddenly inspired to do all the work yourself.
Let me know whatever you decide! ![]()

I like the idea of taking Aug. off but I would like to add in a 2nd vote for Carrot for whenever the next one is. As much as I hate to admit it, that Costco carrot cake IS pretty amazing. SO moist and delicious. Would be fab to find a fantastic scratch cake so I could say "TAKE THAT!!" to Costco LOL.
Hi guys, sorry for not posting the results yet, I got caught up in a few things at home. I've got a pretty busy day today and then I'll tackle it either tonight or tomorrow morning. Unless someone gets antsy and does it first!
Carrot cake sounds great to me. I've got a pretty good one that I'd submit. Also looking forward to trying some new flavours too!! Gotta run or I'll never get it all done today.
I'll post as soon as I can. ![]()
Lita829, no need to apologize. Like I said I liked the flavor just the texture was not my favorite. I was just giving my opinion like everyone else has done. In my house, cakes last 3 to 5 days, even if the cake is really good because there is only 2 of us. We don't like to share lol.
I feel bad. I didn't mean to offend you or your recipe. I just pointed out the difference I saw in the box I bought from the one posted.
After reading vicki3336 comments, maybe I did something wrong or overmix the batter since she said her cake texture for the Softasilk was too light and mine was dense. We both rated it 8.5.
Oh...I'm cool...I didn't take offense
. I am just trying to recall if I added an extra egg or not. I always manage to change recipes in some way, shape, or form once I get used to them
.
I am not sure if CountryCakery was still going to tally the results but if she is unable to do them I'll have time to do it tomorrow. I am in the process of printing out all the critiques now.
Hi Lita,
yeah, I started working on the results today. We've had a busier week than I planned but if you finish first then that's ok by me. Are you using the spreadsheet and entering all the recipes or just tallying the critiques? I suppose the latter would be way faster!! I've been entering recipes this afternoon and it's a bit time consuming. Anyhoo, I'll just keep working at it and try to get it done tonight or tomorrow. Sorry for the delay!!

Thats ok....I just wasn't sure. I assumed that you had gotten busy. I was going to try to enter in the recipes but I think that you are right....it would be faster to just tally up the results. I didn't look at the yellow cake thread to see who did the original yellow cake spreadsheet but I'd really like to thank them...it must have taken a lot of time and effort. You go girl ![]()
I'll chill and let you complete it since you are further than I am. I just printed off the critiques but I haven't plugged anything into the spreadsheet. Thanks CountryCakery for your hard work!
I'm workin' the tortise angle for sure! Slow and steady. ![]()
Hey all! Sorry to have sort of abandoned this thread. But I had a biking accident a few weeks ago and my dominant arm is in a sling. So computer use (not to mention baking!) has been outside my range of abilities. I'm planning on writing a book, "100 things you never realized you needed two hands to do." as soon as I can type with more than one finger.
Thanks for working on the spreadsheet, Country. I'll be back at it as soon as I can.
Well, sound the horns, here it is!! The long (long, long) awaited tab results! I really took forever so sorry about that, and I didn't copy all the recipes into the spreadsheet. It just started to take too long. But if you don't already have all of them, you can copy and paste them from page 3 of this thread. I tried to attach the spreadsheet but my computer won't allow that particular file to attach for some reason. I'm sorry.
Some of the recipes only got reviewed by one baker and so the results are somewhat skewed I think. But this is what I've got: The two top rated cakes were the Double Chocolate Layer Cake and Black Magic Cake (which is identical to Wicked Wanda's except for a minor adjustment to the oil amount). Both recieved a 9 rating but were also both baked by just one baker. Of the cakes that were baked by multiple bakers Toba's Chocolate Fudge Cake edged out the others at an 8.6. The two runners up were SCW's Fudge Brownie Cake and Soft As Silk Deluxe Chocolate Cake both at 8.5. I'll let each of you decide based on these results which you believe is the winner.
Enjoy ![]()
ps: artscallion, I'm so sorry to hear about your accident! I hope you're feeling better. If not already, then soon!
Woohoo! Thanks CountryCakery! CC is acting really strange for me right now. But if you want to, you can upload the spreadsheet to Google and there's a way to make it a shareable document. I think they did that for the Holiday Recipes list way back when. I'd explain more but my computer is having a fit right now ![]()

Thank you all very much for testing these recipes, and thank you CountryCakery4 for posting the results... I look forward to trying them myself. One can never have enough great recipes~! ![]()
