Hmmm..I would say a nice Ganache as it dry pretty sturdy.Or...poured fondant icing!
I have dipped cupcakes in petit four icing. If your petit four icing is too thin, you can double dip after the first layer has cooled and set. I then piped a rose on top. It's the pink/red cupcakes surrounded by a 6" cake in my gallery if you wanna see the results.

i use glace icing, it works well for me, but i do want to try poured fondant too.
