I am stacking three cakes and really don't want to have a border separating the tiers.
How can I achieve this with out the cardboard showing?

Cut the cardboards slightly smaller than the cake itself. All that will be showing is the icing on the sides.

If you're using fondant, wrap the fondant under the cake board. It helps if you set it on something that has a slightly smaller diameter than the cake board itself while you're covering it.

You could also run a bead of icing around the tier's base, then with a dampened finger or small spatula, smooth the bead (like one caulks around a bathtub...matter of fact, those little gadets (scraper/edgers(about credit card size) with rounded/curved corners) work like a charm for this!)
