punkinpie -

I just shipped a box to CA and my friend up there said she only had to pay 5.00 + the usual sales tax (which you pay within the country anyway) Of course with any shipping, find out ahead of time what it's going to run.

It depends on the method of shipment and the value put on the package. If you put a low value on the package or put it as a gift you can pay little or no fees.

Yes, I'm sure that does have a bearing...

Is there a certain dollar amount that you have to pay more taxes on?

I usually ship United States post office.

I totally agree....I just love Fancy Flours site out of Boseman Montana which is really only a state away since I am in Alberta and they are in Montana.....they have a $40.00 shipping charge to Canada regardless of what you buy so it really isn't worth it unless I have alot to purchase or a cake friend to order also and share the shipping costs..Grrrr.Golda's is okay but she is expensive...I really wish scoop n save would get their act together an concentrate on opening a online store. They would really do well and have a great selection!!It doesn't help that our postal system charges outrageous postal fees even to send a parcel within Canada.

If you ship courier its usually around a value of $20 when you have to start paying brokerage fees.

I am Also in Saskatchewan, and I use golda's for fondant (even with shipping, it's cheaper than wilton- and MUCH better tasting)

http://www.galeswholesale.com/ - has all the dummies you need, and is right in Regina! If you don't have a business license, you can order online from their site and pick it up at the warehouse. I just bought 10 dummies and paid only $28.....

Also, ebay is a great place for cookie cutters and such. Blue lake fox has some great products, and rezzies cakes and treats has a great selection too icon_smile.gif

Hope that helps!! icon_biggrin.gif

Whooooa, where are all you fellow Canadians trying in the US that won't ship to Canada? If you know what you need, email me and I'll let you know where I buy mine from. I've done costing on tons of things and I think I'm a pretty good internet/local shopper. Just my opinion though. icon_lol.gif

There are several sites in Canada to order from that have reasonable pricing. You need to figure out the real cost of the item. If the item generally comes from the US and it's $x there then it's how much in CDN$? You take the exchange rate and voila! Then add in shipping and what you might pay at the border. You pay PST & GST (or HST) in your own province so you have to count that in. If your package gets stopped at the border they will charge you a $5 handling fee plus taxes. I've never been charged duties on these items. Now if it comes UPS or Fedex there might be a brokerage charge. So take that and subtract $5 that you would have paid the Receiver General. Add that to your cost. If you compare USD & CDN dollar amounts you might be surprised to find that it's

actually cheaper to buy here in Canada or maybe it's way cheaper to buy that item in the US. But you have to compare apples to apples. Not the posted price on the US site of $1 to what it ends up being here. Because that US $ is not the same as a Canadian one. And today the rate is pretty good. I have several sites I buy from regularly and some are good for some things and others for other things. ($20 cdn is the mail exempt amt)

Oh yes, if you buy an item made in the UK from a Canadian distributor you might find that it's cheaper in Canada than it is in the US to start with.

Having said all this, I find that about 50% of the time or more, stuff comes through without any charges. Sometimes even the $$$ orders.

And if you are shopping in the US and being honest when you cross to come home you will be paying sales taxes anyway. And the $5 fee.

I also find that great customer service counts when I buy anything. And there are some really good ones out there. One of them I can't even name on here or it gets eaten by the cyber fairies. <ggg>

It also helps to plan your purchases ahead so you can buy enough to make the shipping worth it. But that goes for anything. I'm not lucky enough to have a great place locally to run and pick something up. icon_cry.gif

I see Jen is in this thread. My last box from her was a set shipping amount and she could stuff it as full as she wanted and as heavy as she could. So I order what I need (and she tells me how to use the product and helps a lot when I mess up) and get her to fill it with the super white merkins and Pettinice (can't get super white here and it's actually cheaper than adding the Titanium Dioxide myself buying from her).

Flour Confections.ca has dummies I see. And a bucket of Massa cost $15 to ship. Not bad in my book! icon_biggrin.gif

I have not found a company that will ship postal service to Canada, only Courier Service. This is due to the high number of parcels that get lost when using the postal service. Using a courier like UPS is when all of the fees come in. Brokerage and collection fees. The duty (sales tax) is the smallest part of the cost usually.

For cookie cutters I have bought from here and the shipping was cheap and fast.
https://cookiecutter.com/
I always shop around and found that alot of times I might find what I need on ebay with cheap shipping. I too have noticed more and more companies will not ship to Canada which is frustrating. I will always look to see if they ship to Canada before I will shop at their store and move on to the next one when I find out they won't. I just bought some stuff off ebay and was cheaper than the stores and the shipping was only 5 dollars and I didn't pay duty or taxes.

I think someone has to open a shop in Canada so we can all enjoy stress free shopping.

I placed an order with this company, and even including p&p, it was still cheaper for me to order them from the US and have them sent to the UK, than it was for me to buy the same items in the UK.

Of course, that was a while ago... not sure now, with exchange rates icon_sad.gif

-Global Sugar Art shipped USPS, I owed only taxes and it was a big box and a big $ order
-www.jenniferdontz.com was $25, box was filled with $$$ & #, taxes on small amount, USPS (BEST customer service)
-sugared (Sharon), USPS and great customer service!!!
-foosecookiecutters.com, USPS, nothing at border (great customer service)
-?shugercraft? ships USPS, only had taxes
-cakesbysam.com I think was USPS and only taxes. What I saved on the air brush system with their prices more than covered the little bit more in postage. These are just the ones I have used recently.

In Canada
flourconfections.ca was $15 and UPS
Goldas was ? and UPS
mccalls wasn't bad for pricing
creativecutters was just postal system and reasonable

one of my biggest pet peeves are US companies that either won't ship via USPS or won't take a Canadian credit card. I have tons of friends in the US so if I don't need something quickly, I can have it sheipped to one of them, but not if they won't take my damned Visa...my FAVOURITE clothing store is one of the ones that won't accept a non-US credit card. Ugh.

If you're a US vendor, and want to attract Canadian customers, PLEASE have a FAQ page that says that you ship to Canada and how. That's the very first thing I look for now - not prices, not what you sell - but if you ship to Canada via USPS. If your shopping card does address lookup matches and will only accept US credit cards, say so...that way I won't spend time trying to ship to my buddy in Seattle.

UPS and FedEx charge brokerage fees of around $49 to bring a shipment into Canada. USPS on the other hand links up with Canada Post, so I only have to pay $5 handling plus taxes.

I love Golda's for mail order and Scoop-n-save for local stuff. Havent' tried Flour Confections, Cake Mischief or For The Love of Cakes yet, but they're on my list!!!!!!

I haven't ordered from for the love of cakes yet, but I did email a question to them and they responded right away and also said that if you are local (they are in port Coquitlam, BC) you can pick up your order and save your shipping costs.
They seemed friendly enough, and I am definitely gonna order from them as soon as i need something from them.

They are working on it according to their website. As of right now, if you know what you want, you can order via email. I don't think that there's anything they don't carry! lol! Plus S&S has excellent customer service, they are so friendly and knowledgable.

I use Golda's sometimes, but being in Montreal, I am not far fromPlattsburgh and Global Sugar Art. My wife and I go shopping every coupke of months, so I just order what I want, and pick it up. It also helps that my parents spend their summers in the US - I make sure to stock up due to lack of supply here.

They responded to a email I sent them right away as well. I was wondering about shipping cost, since it said it was around $500 for a $22 order. icon_eek.gif I knew it couldn't be right since I am only a couple provinces (ok, 3) away...but they said the shipping costs will be only the amount Canada Post charges.

Thank you JulyMama, CookiezNCupcakez, and layers for posting all of those sites! I am going to go and check those out as soon as I can!

However, Layers, I tried the cookiecuttershop (which actually prompted my post!) because I love all the cutters and such but it said that they do not ship to Canada... but are they possibly taking special requests?

wow I just noticed( I wanted to order something and I couldn't), I ordered from them a little while back and they even gave me a little bonus mini cutter. sorry about that. I'll be scratching them off my good list. I'm glad you found the others helpfull.
