We just got a kitty, and I think the littler box idea is absolutely hilarious!! I would do it! LOL
Thank you for this post! I decided to do this for my kids for school today. I read up about it first, and found that Little Debbie Brownies work better than tootsie rolls, and adding black food coloring while the cookies are in the food processor make the litter look gray, like real litter. I then used blue and green sugar sprinkles for the crystals.
It received great reviews when dropping it off this morning. People couldn't believe it was cake. I never would have pulled it off, if not for this post.

OK So here is the Scoop 
- My kids were out at friends houses most of the day and I was able to make it under cloack and daggar! Totally on the DL! Had it complete and when evening rolled around called them in side while their friends were stilll outside.
I had smeared RI on the scooper and put some nuggets on it also to give it the 'real old look'. 
I had the scooper in my hand and started yelling at them and questioning who's turn it was and who didn't do their cat box chore... yada yada. I started to shake and get all worked up and(fighting a huge smile) started yelling/crying at them that it isn't fair to the cats and (fibbed) that a cat had pooped on the floor and I shook the scooper and it flopped out and bounced off my son's chest. He jumped and was about to puke.
My daughter was freaked and they were exchanging darting looks of horror and disbelief and then I licked the scooper!!! EWWS and gagging promptly followed..LOL They were completely fooled and thought I had lost it! I burst out in a sing song, "April Fools!" And their mouths were just agape and were dumbfounded. "It's cake?- It's cake!", they kept saying. 
My son then snatched up and nugget and chomped away..LOL My daughter still was unsure and grossed out to the max. I then grabbed the litter box that had been out of veiw to them and said, "OK you can go, But not before you eat some Cat POOP!' And I ploped it down on the table and they echoed eww's again. 
I took it out to dish some up to my neighbors and all the kids who were all impressed and gobbled down their nuggets. They were amazed at how realistic it was. After hearing the nuggets were make from chocolate truffle mix, she snatched up a piece and couldn't MMMMMmmm enough.
I had some left over and my husband came home and he was so grossed out even though it was already half eaten it took him a couple hours to warm up to the idea of eating it. He loathes the cat box! I must admit the gross out appearance almost makes it taste a bit less then it actually is...LOL
It was great! I had a blast! My son said I rocked the Cat Box and I am the Queen of Fool this year! 
That is seriously the funniest/grossest thing I've heard all day. I am laughing so hard I'm crying right now! 
Geez, both of your cakes look sooo gross!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So, I guess that means you did a great job!!
I know how my kids would have reacted when they were younger, and it would have been fun to pull this on them. They always said they never knew what I was going to do next. Glad you all had fun with it. I know some kids who would have been scarred for life. Very sad. Not mine. Our house has never been short on laughs. It's wonderfully theraputic.

Yeah It took me a while because my pc was at the doctor's house being fixed. I just got back on-line on my own machine Sunday night! I couldn't upload pics on my friends pc.
It really was funny! The kids just gobbled it up.
