I've never done black fondant or royal, but when I have to do any significant amount of black buttercream I start with chocolate... you end up using a lot less color and therefore it tastes better.

I usually just use Wilton gel colors, but I have heard a lot of people say that Americolors are deeper and take less for things like red and black.

Good luck!

For the fondant I would start with chocolate fondant... Satin Ice chocolate fondant is really dark so you wouldn't need to add a ton of black. Also, if you have an airbrush, you could spray the fondant black. I would color the royal icing brown first and then add some black.

I have done lots of black and I love the Americolors colors. I don't have to use very much black to get the nice dark color and I never start with a chocolate icing as I don't want the chocolate flavor. for tinting the fondant poke a few holes in it and add a 1-2 drops of the color into each hole then place in a bag or wear plastic gloves to mix well. Start off with a smaller amount than you think you will need as you will be surprized with the americolors. thumbs_up.gif

I did black fondant for a Darth Vader cake for my son. I started the fondant 2 days ahead of time to let the color set. Toba Garrett's book, The Well Decorated Cake, had the recipe I used. It was a mixture of red, green, black and purple I think (I can check tonight if you like). It sounded crazy but it worked. It didn't taste good but I also used Wilton which a lot of people say doesn't taste good from the beginning. The kids mouths turned purple too from all the coloring it took.

I've never used it but they have black fondant listed on ebay you can buy. It's $13.30 for a 2lb container. It may be worth it.

Good luck!

It takes a LOT of wilton black to tint MMF. I've heard the Americolor tints much easier. If you're tinting alot of MMF black, you can add the color to the melted marshmallows first.

I just made black fondant and royal icing for a piano cake. I used the Wilton fondant as the decorations were not going to be eaten. The Wilton fondant seems to take the color a lot better than the mmf.

For the royal icing it took A LOT of black icing color. I used the Wilton but next time I will have to try the americolors everyone is recommending.

Good luck to you, I got a nice black color and was very pleased with the results.

Thanks guys- I will try the Americolors (if I can find it) as I just used my entire new bottle of black wilton color and I still only have a dark grey. I guess I will have to buy extra just in case! At least I am not worried about the flavor of it as I am doing it on styrofoam.
