I see all the cute wired decorations popping out of cakes here, and I was wondering how this is done. Is any wire okay, do you need tape, etc. Someone....anyone...loll. Thanks cakers!

It is my understanding that you cannot insert wires into cake. (you shouldn't insert tape, either) They are not food safe.

What I do is insert the wire into a coffee straw. They are tiny. Then I secure it with a little bit of coordinating fondant.

the wire is florists wire, cake shops will have it. and online you can get lots of options. 24 guage is a good starting point (ive used it with stars), but for heavier items, you will need something thicker (a lower guage number).
to use it, when you have your fondant shape ready, i put some eggw hite or edible glue on the top of the wire, it holds the fondant in place.
