Alright, so my first "real" cake wreck.....it hit hard because the last cake (gold wedding cake in my gallery) was in my eyes PERFECT. So this was a little heartbreaking.
My sister was graduating from UF with a degree in construction management. I found this great cake on CC and decided to make it.
The inspiration is the first photo.
Well first off, I was going through finals myself so I really pushed my timeline for the cake. I didn't level my cakes right, and filling them, well it looked decent the night before it settled. My dad ended up dropping a glass on the top tier so it went down to just a single tier cake. Needless to say I should have given myself more time.
The gp roses (5 petal cutter) was a first for me and I didn't let my inner cones dry... ffr make them ahead of time!
Okay, so I make the drive from Orlando to Gainesville (2 hours) and the icing buldges and part of it slides off (sorry for the crappy pics, they are from my phone)! My icing was WAY to soft.
BUT this is were I redeem myself, she's doing construction management so I go to walmart and buy a little CAT machine and shove it into the side of the cake! People thought I meant to do it... they were less impressed when I told them that I messed up. Anyway, as much as I hated the cake at the time, I love it now
* sorry it never lets me order the photos the way I want them!! grr. unless i get lucky
That is a great cake wreck. Had you not said that you intentionally smashed the CAT truck into the side of the cake I would not have known it was to cover a mini-mess. The cap and scroll look great!
if you hadnt said no-one would have been the wiser well done you that is what i call artistic licence heheh..
Wow, if you hadn't said it was a wreck, I am positive that no one would have has a clue. Awesome save!! If there is another one don't say anything. Watch for the reactions first, then say it was intended. LOl. Even when you mess up your work is magnificent. Now that is talent.
I just went thru the same thing. Made a 3 tier stacked cake & during transport lost the icing off the back (thank goodness it was the back) & the front slid down, but not completly off. I did some creative camoflauging & no one was the wiser!
When people compliment you on it, just bite your tongue, smile & accept it. They don't know any better! HA! Great cakers know how to improvise & you do it well!
Bravo
ya, this was just for my family and sisters bf so i wasn't too worried. Its hard to see your "not best work" and have people say it looks great...when you know what you are really capable of
thanks for the sweet words... I did this cake in DEC and was too embarrassed to put it up just yet lol.
As my Art Instructor would say...."It's a 'happy' mistake!" I love it and it just proves how you can think out of the box! GREAT RECOVERY!

I think the CAT is brilliant! It was appropriate and it "covered" your wreck. The cap and scroll look marvelous too! I wouldn't worry about anything. If you learn from your mistakes, then you are way ahead of the game.
Great save! Makes me miss home though (Gainesville is my hometown and I am a Florida girl no matter where the Marine Corps sends us).
Actually, I like the cat 'wreck' better than the inspiration cake. It has a sense of humor and perfectly appropriate for the grad.
great job.
i love the diploma and the hat. I was wondering if you could please tell me how to make them?
thank you,
Kimberley
It turned out great! I too find that when I am squeezed for time that things go wrong. I'm glad it turned out for you, compliments on the inventive fix!
I think it actually is more fitting this way too! I'm glad you were able to think quick and rescue the cake. Bloody brilliant!
hahaha this is bloody brilliant! Good save , i would of given up all hope lol! its 9 am here and this has put a smile to my face *normally i dont smile before dinner time lmao*
LOL!!! That is way too awesome!! GREAT SAVE!! HEHEHE!!! I hope my first wreck ends up like yours! LOL!!! Should've told anyone it was a mistake!! HEHEHEHE
