These cakes are AWESOME! I was looking at them thinking 'this is the loser group! WOW!'. I loved the concept of the soul mate cake. I also loved the tapered cake, it reminded me of a wedding dress. The mask cake was great too! They were all great and it was REALLY hard to choose! Great job ladies!

I have cast my vote...wonderful job! However, I must say I am extremely disappointed that the use of dummy cakes is allowed. I thought the point of the contest was for EVERYTHING to be edible. It was not, for me, hard to vote on this contest, due to the simple fact that not everything was genuine. For the contest to even be considered fair, each contestant should have to meet the same guidelines. I hope the rest of you who still have to vote take this into consideration and vote for genuine talent and skill.

WOW, is all I have to say to that last post. Rules are they can use cake dummies and therefore, should not feel as if their skills and talents aren't genuine when they follow the rules and use dummies as allowed. I can see why dummies are used and allowed. For a contest such as this, where no one tastes the cake, but rather votes on your decorating skills techniques and style, it is most cost effective to use dummies. There is one caveat to using dummies. You can't use dummies if you are carving a cake. If you enter a carved cake, then you have to use real cake. I believe all the ladies here followed the rules to a "T" and have shown their true amazing talent. Anyone can bake and decorate a cake, but what these ladies have show us here is true talent and skill. And most of all, they had fun competing against each other, pushing their limits, practicing old and new techniques and decorating their cakes (real or dummies) from their hearts. I commend each and every one of them and applaud them for such beautiful cakes.

I second that! A dummy is just as difficult to decorate as a real cake, if not more so because you have to get the fondant to adhere properly. dummy or not, true and outstanding talent is being displayed in this contest!

Do you have any idea how cruel what you just wrote truly is???
You have a right to your opinion but you should keep your derisive comments to yourself.

I agree. Thank goodness you aren't a judge for OSSAS or the Mid-Atlantic Cake Show or some other national cake competition you'd really have a hard time(as most of those cakes are dummies)icon_rolleyes.gif Thanks for participating none the less.

Rule #9. With the exception of sculpted cakes, dummies are allowed. 3-D sculptures may only use Styrofoam where absolutely necessary.

If any of you can and will recall, the ORIGINAL contest rules, when the Throw Down contest began last year, was that EVERYTHING must be edible. Why this has changed, is unknown to me. I know that not everyone will agree with my opinion, and that is fine. Like someone previously said, I have a right to my opinion, as do all of you, and I simply stated so. My opinion is not "truely cruel", I just feel the contest was not held to equal standards and requirements. [/b][/u]

Your opinion is CRUEL and there was no need for you to share it. I used a dummy on my cake and it was just as hard to decorate it as it would have been if it were real cake. I had no use for a giant 3 tier cake to feed my small family of 5, but I do need more display cakes so that's what I did. My previous throwdown cake was real cake because I happen to have a use for it and unless you have previously participated in a throwdown I don't see why it matters to you what we all used for our entry.

Yes, you are entitled to your own opinion. But what you said is that if someone used a cake dummy, their talent and skill isn't genuine and shouldn't be voted on. That's just rude and offensive to any one who uses dummies. So all those ladies and men that enter into "real" contests, like at the Mid Atlantic Cake Show (sorry, might have butchered that name), etc., don't have genuine talent and shouldn't be judged for the hard work that they put into decorating? How about people who decorate cake dummies so they can build up their portfolio? Are they not genuine in what they do? Should people not order from them b/c they use dummies to practice on and take photos? Baking costs la lot of money...and when you are practicing or entering contests like this or even the big ones....it makes sense to use dummies. I don't fault anyone for using them...more power to them!

And, as with all things, rules change and evolve into something more. If you don't like the rules, don't participate. But, you don't need to come here and tell these ladies that their work isn't genuine b/c they used dummies and that people should take that into account when they vote. Everyone participating had the opportunity to bake a cake or use dummies...some chose to bake b/c maybe they were having a party and served the cake, or maybe b/c they want to perfect a recipe or try out a new one, or maybe they wanted to try their hand at carving a cake. Some decided to use dummies b/c maybe they didn't want to do a carved carke, or they have their recipes down, know how to stack or do whatever and just want to practice their decorating skills or try a new technique or maybe they just didn't have the money for all the ingredients to make 6+ cakes.

But what we all should remember and take into account is that none of the contestants are squawking about any of their opponents using cake dummies. They all knew the rules...they could have backed out if they felt it was unfair.

Geez, why people have to turn a positive event into something negative is beyond me. Don't have anything nice to say, don't say it at all. Plus, the rules changed to perhaps welcome the decorators that wanted to used dummies so more people could participate...deal with it.

Trixyinaz,

My comment has been posted, my opinion stated, my vote submited..."deal with it". Why you people can't accept a different opinion being stated than your own "is beyond me". Freedom of speech, freedom to post, freedom to think differently than a few of you on here.

Opinion and bashing someone is entirely different. If you would have just asked politely, rather than coming in here and acting like it was a crime or that the rules changed without your approval, perhaps you would have gotten different responses.

3rd post, nothing but negativity, no photo's, joined in Sept. 2008, but seems to know the rules from Feb. 2008? Hmmmmm, could you be a troll?

Troll??? Do you always think this deviously? No, no troll here, but I do read.

I was not "bashing" anyone, however, you and your little following have sure jumped the gun on bashing me over my opinion. Let it go, I have...and I have better things to do with my time than fret over whether or not you and your followers agree with me or not.

Go Vicki~ thumbs_up.gif You worked really hard on these contests, and we don't need this type of negativity.

Opinions are one thing, but deciding whether or not someone has talent based on the use of a dummy? Really?
I guess none of the photos in Bride magazine (and others) are any good, because MOST of them are dummies. icon_rolleyes.gif

We are in this for FUN... and we all respect each other... The winners win because they DESERVE to win. icon_smile.gif

You really seemed to have derived pleasure out of stirring this up. It's like throwing a granade but not wanting to stick around for the fallout. Instead, from a distance, watching to see what happens.
Hate the cakes all you want, that's not the point and you know it!
