If you, as a cake decorator, (I'm sure a lot of you have ideas floating in your heads, too, to make your life easier) have an idea for a decorating tool that you're confident would sell, if you could only have it made, who would you turn to? I have this idea I've wanted to develop ever since I started decorating, only I don't know where to go or who to go to... Any ideas?
Joining this website has only reinforced my confidence that it would sell, based on a lot a questions and frustrations I've read here! This is the greatest website...I'm truly addicted! I've learned sooo much! ![]()
The first thing would be to get a patent but i wouldn't know how to go about that. May look at the library for a book on the subject?

Also what I would do is get a "poor man's patent." You take you idea and write it out. Then you send it to yourself CERTIFIED MAIL (important that it go certified). You keep the letter sealed and it is your proof if anyone tries to steal your idea along the way. At $2.67, it's not a bad deal. It's not as official as a real patent, but it will do until. Patents are very expensive and a pain in the butt to get (2 years and counting for me and my boyfriend's idea). HTH.
Another thing you should do - since you're in the planning/development stage - is decide what material your product would need to be made from, if you haven't already. Once you decide that, & after you start the patent process if you're going to, start looking for fabricators in your area, ie, plastic fabricators, sheet metal fabricators...you might even know of or come across someone who does these things as a hobby at home. You could have a "test product" made to see how it would turn out with your intial design...and then be able to tweak it from there to make it the best it can be. It would cost you a little, but would give you a better product in the end to go to a distributor with and would look more professional to either a distributor or even just local shops you might want to try selling in first....jmo! ![]()
