i've attached a picture of an instrument (nerdy science cake!) that i want to make. i could make it with the door closed but i would rather have the door open but am not sure how i would do that. any ideas? how can i attach a door and what would i make it out of?
im going to make pound cake and cover it with fondant.

I think I would just use a piece of cardboard or foam covered with fondant and maybe use dowels to attach to the cake at the corners. You could use a box top also if it wasn't really heavy. HTH
