Urgent - How Many Roses Ontop Of 6" Square Cake
Decorating By mrssambo Updated 14 Jan 2007 , 11:20am by mrssambo
I have just had a phone call from a lady who has asked me to do her a wedding cake for 27th Jan - yes that is 2 weeks away. It is to be 4 tier square for 100 guests and the top tier for them to keep.
I have estimated that they need a 12", 10", 8" and 6". She just wants it to be plain white fondant with red wine ribbon around the edges - she is going to match the colour and bring me the ribbon. I am wondering how many roses will need to go ontop of the 6" cake? I have chosen not to make them due to lack of time and lack of notice and she understands this, so I am in the process of buying them, still looking as to where from - any suggestions from Australia would be appreicated.
Please please please - how many do I need to make it look full but not over the top - I dont want it to look scabby either.
Thanks so much - btw it is 11pm here in australia and I need to go and get these tomorrow -well pricing anyway so I can quote her.
BTW - what would you charge for a cake of this size with such short notice?
Thanks so much
Angela
wow dont you just love 2 weeks notice!
i have just finished a rose topper for an upcoming wedding cake and that will sit on a 6" round, i used 9 roses, so i would say at least that many if not a few more.. it depends on the look you want..
if you want gumpaste roses i know bakerysugarcraft sell them and they are in NSW..
I am charging 450.00 for my next cake its only 3 tiers 12" 9" and 6" all different flavour mud cakes covered in fondant so i guess you could charge any thing above this. i wouldnt charge less... i only live in a small victorian town and people are jumping at that price cause in the bigger cities you pay more...
i just uploaded a wedding cake, the bride supplied the top 2 tiers of fruit cake and i made the bottom in mud and made the flowers. i charged 250 for this but if i made all the cakes i would of charged about 450.00.
hope i have helped!
cheers
I would charge extra just for the headache.......... ![]()
Sorry I cant be more help.
When I do my flower basket cake, it's an 8 inch round with a half-ball pan on top with buttercream roses, there are about 100 roses on top. I'll post the picture and add the link here. The 1/2 sport ball pan is the equivalent to a 6 inch cake, although it will hold way more flowers than a flat top of a square cake. For flat tops use about 1/3 that many roses (or have that many available.) So you're looking at about 30-35 roses, depending on size.
[edited to include this link] I just uploaded the picture I was talking about. Here's the link: http://www.cakecentral.com/modules.php?name=coppermine&file=displayimage&pos=-99943

thanks so much for your help. I went down to spotlight today - a fabric and craft typ shop, and I purchased some fake roses sort of a felty wetsuit material. They look really good and easy enough to do. I told the lady whose cake I am doing that to do the flowers would cost her a lot more, so she is happy to go with the fakes.
I am thinking of charging her $400 Aus, but others are telling me it is too cheap. I worked out that my expenses for cost of the cake is $135. Would you all charge more or less? It is a very basic cake which all I have to do is cover in fondant and put the ribbon around - no piping no scrolls - oh and the flowers as a topper.
What do you all think?
hey mrssambo
i am glad you worked the flower situation out, sorry i couldn't help out more....
is this your first big wedding cake, is so i think your price is fair.. like you said its only fondant and ribbon with the roses so not heaps of details to put on...
this is just my opinion, someone else may offer a better answer..
cheers
kylie
yes - it is my biggest cake by far and was a referral from the other wedding cake I did - basic single layer with fondant loopy bow. I certainly dont want to overcharge yet I dont want to make it too cheap as with the money I make I intend on purchasing more equipment for decorating.
Kylie - that is ok - the flowers should look good and easy enough for me to do. I had the exact same flowers on my wedding cake and people kept on asking me if they could eat them. I didnt make my cake, but purchased them for the cake lady.
