Need Ideas For Outer Space Cake (Aliens, Space Ships, Etc)
Decorating By srworegon Updated 14 Jan 2007 , 11:53pm by sweetlybaked
My son has a Cub Scout cake auction next week and our theme is "outer space". So far our ideas are: Star Wars (R2D2, Darth Vader, Yoda, Storm Troopers, Ewok's, etc) or an alien, a space ship, planets, a rocket (NASA). While I've thought of all these ideas as a general idea and I've looked through the galleries, that doesn't help when it comes down to making the cake.... Where to start. Does anyone have any creative ideas as this is a contest. I would also need some basic instructions. I've made some creative cakes but nothing elaborate. I can use fonant and the decorating isn't a problem. It's how to make the cake into the shape we want/need. We'll just use a box cake so no recipes are needed (thanks anyways). We can use edible and non-edible accessories, too.
Thanks for the ideas and any instructions or tips you have (such as what kind of pans to use for odd-shapes, etc.)
I remember when we did my sons cake. That was like 8 yrs ago. We made a train. We had alot of fun. I am assuming he is going to help you right. My suggestion make it simple and fun if that is the case. Ours was alitlle to detailed. And I did alittle bit of it. And he didn't win. And heard several comments that I don't think he helped at all and mom did it all. I don't know how your troop will be. But DS guided me and told me everything he wanted and couldn't do it himself. So I think they felt he didn't help. He did though which upset me. I would do a simple round cake what ever size you choose. And let him go wild. What color is a space ship?? Ask him. Then mix the frosting and let him do it. If he wants to add candies. ask him what he wants and let him put them on. This is from my experience. I don't want to tell you what to do but only what happened to us. We thought his cake would do well. We were told by several people it was so cute. But they thought I did it all and that was not true. I only helped him. Just my 2 cents. Good Luck ![]()
Well if you want to do an alien head. Thats easy enough. I use a X-mas tree pan, turn upsidedown. Cut off the trunk and angle the bottom of the tree slightly to round it alittle. Then just ice it green and pipe some big eyes on it.
Also, i make a flying saucer using the center pole stand. I ice the pole yellow and the base green then ice the bottom of the upper plate with gray, make a single layer cake to fit the upper plate and round it off a bit, then ice that gray and decorate how ever you want
Debbie Brown has a fun, simple alien cake in one of her books. It's really cute and the kids would love it.
I did a Jimmy Neutron cake, but it took me a long time because of the planet. If I had made a bunch of smaller planets, though, I'm sure it would have been alot easier. ![]()
Good luck! I'll try and get the Debbie Brown cake posted for inspiration.

You could bake a sheet cake and cut the shape out. You could make a rocket pretty easily like this one (not the cake, just the shape of the rocket):

Or you could do maybe a couple of round cakes decorated like planets. The flying saucer might not be too hard and you could make windows in it w/ aliens in the windows.
For the Star Wars theme, you could do R2D2 pretty easily. Stack some flat round cakes together and then for the top you could either use a sports ball pan or a pyrex bowl to make the top. Just fill all the layers and maybe use a dowel through the whole thing. That would be fun and also unique.
Just have fun, no matter what. You guys will do great and even more importantly, you and your son will have fun doing it! HTH.
