I did just regular buttercream, but I think you could use just about anything.

I use plain old buttercream, flavored with almond and vanilla extracts, but I fill it with Nutella that has been thickened with a little powdered sugar.

White Almond Sour Cream Cake.
I use fondant, but I fill with raspberry and cheesecake most of the time.
