When the bridal consultant that you are working with tells you she has a cake for you, and the bride is going for an "ULTRA MODERN THEME" I of course have neve done anything close to that....never been my cup of tea...but I wanted to draft up a few sketches/examples for her, but....WHAT THE HECK DOES "ULTRA MODERN" mean??????? Any thoughts? Thanks sooo much!!!
Did she give you any other info? Colors or anything? I'd say anything less-traditional. I did a topsy turvy turquoise and black polka dotted cake for a wedding, she considered it to be very modern.

Yeah, she wants dark red, a dark orange, and gold. But don't call them "fall colors"....cuz she DOES NOT want it to be "fall-like" For some reason when I think of Topsey-Turvey cakes I think...fun, whimsical, silly. You know pretty mush the opposite of modern! Just goes to show ya how different everyone's mind works! ...I am kind of automatically drawn to square cakes, what do you think?
Yes, square is more modern than round would be, so I'd definitely start there.
I didn't consider my topsy turvy to be modern either, but the bride did and you're right, everyone has their own ideas of style, for sure!
Dark red, orange and gold but not fall-like? That's tough!! Fondant or BC?
I think of Square cakes as well. Clean lines, very Classy, Structured, simple and very graphic.
modern...sleek, stream line, simple, very uncluttered, no flowers
dark colors, not pastel or whites
ribbon around the base of each cake
square
this is what i think of...best to talk to her and have her give you what SHE thinks modern is since her opinion is the only one that counts!
How about this....is this "Modern"?

FYI - one of my other favorite places to look for ideas is www.flickr.com - I just typed in modern wedding cake and there are tons. There is one on there with the name "crazy love" and it is the epitome of what I think of when someone says "ultra modern"..........hope this helps!
BTW, there is one on there with your "not fall" colors....it is simply named "3 Tier Wedding Cake".
I'd do square. Clean lines. No flowers. There's one in here already with those colors even, where the color graduates from one to the other. Really cool, but I can't think of who did it.
jhansen13 - WHOAAA!!!
I think that definitely falls into the "modern" catagory!!!
I know huh??? Wild!!! And with my luck, that's what she would pick out too!!!

No...I definitely plan to, but her fiance is getting ready to leave for Iraq, so she is pretty caught up in that. I just wanted to have some basic and general ideas for her to look at when I do meet with her. Way easier IMO to have her point out specific details she likes, rather than trying to design the whole cake from "her" words..Ya know? That scares me....

That is amazingly cool.

OMG!!! Thanks you soooo much!!! I am going to look there for sure!!!!
I agree that everyone has different interpretation of "Modern" and when someone says ULTRA Modern your mind races.
a couple of thoughts:
you might suggest clean lines and scroll work or plain ribbon on the cake.
Tiers that are hidden that make the cake tiers look like they are floating would be cool and then decorate in fondant or bc with gold beads and red/orange flowers (I saw one online with a clear plastic column in the center, looked "modern")
A tiered clean lined cake iced in chocolate ganache with red/orange flowers
Cake with the tiers off centered
There are many good ideas that others have given you. Hope they help.
When I think of Modern I think of something like this cake by PieceofCake AZ.
But thats just my thoughts.
This is a beautiful cake!!!

That is totally modern to me. I think it would look good in the "unfall" colours.

OOOOOOHHHHH!!!! How wonderful!!!! the white base (as it IS a wedding after all!) and the circles and so forth in the "un-fall" colors!!! Simply gorgeous!!!!
I just did a weding cake. It was hexagon, bright faux flower bouquet with
"mixed flowes", no roses. The cake was blush, maybe offer tan or
a peach with the unfall colored flowers. Clean lines, small beading and
each tier was a different flavor with different filling!
I love this one by Tonedna .. you could change the colors
Oh...I like this cake too! Thanks guys!
When I think about modern wedding cakes I think of Collette Peters!!! I would go check out some of her work and see if any ideas come to mind!
I think of the cakes the Kate Sullivan has done. Super Modern. www.cakepower.com. I would post them here, but the site won't let me!
I love the cakes posted so far, but when I think ultra modern I think black and white, clean lines, sharp edges, simplicity, art deco. Maybe it's the interior design training, I dunno! This cake is the first thing that popped into my mind:

I think it would be best if you ask the client for her definition of "ultra modern"
In my opinion, there's many different layers to creating an ultra modern cake. You can choose all or some of them.
1. Taste - creating non-traditional taste combinations that tease the palate. For instance a mango filling & orange, passion fruit cake combination. Certainly not your grandma's wedding cake flavor.
2. Shapes- More angular, clean lines. Hexagons, squares.
3. Decorations tend to be on the minimalist side of things, simply flowers (e.g. Gerber daisies, orchids), bold color combinations, monochromatic, Striking patterns (stripes, polka dots, , etc
3. Strong Architectural lines, offset arrangements
Simply put this list can go on forever.
