Do you put the cakes on a cake board, cover with fondant then tranfer it to the main board and then do your detail work from there?

If it is a carved cake, I carve then transfer to the fondant covered board. When I'm doing a normal wedding cake, I put the cake on a foil covered board (same size as cake) then put that on my fondant covered board. I do my fondant boards a few days in advance so they can firm up.
