Well my first class is tomorrow night, YIPPY! I got a phone call today from the class room asst. instructor and I was told to bring all this stuff with me for my first class! I was totally shocked by this bc I read here and over on wiltons.com and everything I have read they say you don't have to take anything. Well I was told to take a 8" cake, any leveling tools I use, apron, towel and the course one kit! I was told that they are going to start off with cake leveling tomorrow night. Okay I got a silly question. I don't have a 8" cake pan so I made my 9" I know I can't follow directions from the begining. But I couldn't just run to the store and buy one bc my kids are sick and I hate taking them out when they are sick. It is that big of a deal to have a9" cake and NOT 8" cake? Also is it common that we have to bring all this stuff the first night or is it just this one instructor? Oh I was also told for week two we will be doing the bear pan cake. Do I have to buy this pan? Okay I think I am done rambling on for now. I will let you all know how I make out with my first night! Also my first night away with no kids in tow!!!!!!
For the first class we were not told to bring anything, I think she just told us what we would be doing and what to bring next class and how to make the icing. Seems like your instructor may want to use the first class time to actually get hands on experience, and show you how to level a cake. My instructor never showed us this, I just figured it out at home.
I had to buy a character pan/bear pan.
I didn't have to take anything on the first day. The instructor brought a cake and showed us how to make buttercream, level and torte the cake. We didn't do the bear pan, instead we did the cake with the rainbow for our second class.
We didn't bring anything with us to the first class. Maybe your teacher just wants more hands on time for you all. (like ChrisfromNOLA said). I can't believe that any instructor would have a problem a 9" cake instead of an 8".
Our instructor was very flexible. Good luck and have a great time at your class. I remember course one. I was so hyped. I loved learning new things each week.

I don't think the 9in will make a difference. I wish our teacher would have had us bring a cake and showed us how to level. We only had to take the kit the first class and she told us everything we would need for the courses..all the extras.
I didn't have any experience so when I started all I had was what came in the kit so there was a lot of things I had to get.
