I downloaded her recipe ages ago from a website and I thought I'd try it for a family birthday this weekend. Perhaps I'm used to boxed cake mixes. After I mixed it up, it was very light. Is it supposed to be that way? The batter had a slight taste of baking powder but didn't taste bad. Will that get more pronounced after it's baked?

I don't normally make cakes from scratch -- usually doctored boxes. So maybe that's the problem. And I hope I haven't just wasted 5 eggs and 3 cups of cake flour.

Any ideas?

I'm trying the chocolate fudge cake next.

Thanks!

I've made her yellow cake before and it is the bomb diggety. Truly great. And yes, the batter looks really light when you put it in the pan.

The only way I know to avoid that baking powder taste, is to put all of your dry ingredients in a seperate bowl and stir it before you add it to the butter&sugar mixture.Good luck.
