So, I made this cake today for a girl turning 13. I based it on a cake by dods. Her cake looked awesome and while I didn't copy the cake exactly, my versoin seems to be missing...something.
If you all could take a look and offer suggestions, I would really appreciate it. Something's missing I just can't put my finger on what!
Thanks
it almost seems like there should be something to make the mouth of the skull stand out a little. its a cool cake.. you did a great job...
exactly! do a grey, or yellowing teeth thing... the mouth is just missing a bit of oomph.
oooo does the girl its for wear braces? maybe you could paint braces on the teeth? eh, maybe that's weird.. LOL
The mouth need something, like everyone else said. And maybe a border along the bottom, maybe purple, pink and black balls, too tie in the colors from the top. Other than that its a great cake, very neat and clean, your diamonds are so straight!!!!
I was thinking the skull could be holding a rose in it's mouth. I agree with the bottom needing a border. I like the pink beading - or pink / black beading. Either way, it's a great cake for a 13yrs old! Good job!
you know, when I first saw this... i though a pink border was the answer! Then I looked at the top and though the mouth was camoflaged in the face (as I said before, with the yellowing teeth comment) but I thin that black lipstick is an awesome idea! Or at least a lipstick of some kind... you could probably even pull off pink if you're a skull.
Seriously, this is a really awesome cake, and anyone would be happy to have it! You have done an amazing job thus far, and can't wait to see the finished version!
I would absolutely outline the teeth. I just looked at a bunch of skull and crossbones pics and think that the outlining of the teeth would really do it. Also, def pink at the bottom. I did one a while back and did a spiked collar on it. You could do a pink collar with silver spikes.
the pink ball ( small balls)border, the lil bit of lipsitck to match may make the cake.
That is an awesome cake!
I would brush some super pearl luster dust on the teeth and outline the mouth in black.
So, here's the final cake. Please let me know if it's better and the "something" is now there.
Thanks again for all the wonderful suggestions, you all are great!
Cookieman: this is for a 13 year old girl who is going through a "goth" period and apparently been there for 12 years. She loves skulls, crossbones, death, black etc, etc. Brandibakes has an awesome cake with a skull with pink hair that is way beyond me, but dods did a girl pirate theme and I "stole" the concept from her. Girl gets "goth", mom gets some pink!
it was GREAT before.. now it is AWESOME! The little touches, (outlining the teeth, the roses, the bead boarder) really finished it off. it's great!
I agree with everyone else. The cake really was great before, now it looks finished. Wonderful job, what a fun cake.
