A lady just left a message for me, she was at a birthday party with one of my cakes and is getting maried in April, she wants info on my wedding cakes (that I have never done!!) I think I have read on here that b/c is like $1.75 per serving fondant $2.25 is that right?? Plus more for gumpasted decorations. I'm soooo nervous and excited, I could really use anyone's help or advice on how to get this process started. Thanks, as always for your help!

Pricing depends on where you live. Yes BC is cheaper than fondant but it also depends on the decorations. If you're doing a cake that has 300 BC roses on it then obviously the price would be more. icon_wink.gif

The best thing to do is call around to local bakeries and find out what their starting prices are for wedding cakes and you can go from there. Don't underprice yourself though!

First and foremost - CONGRATULATIONS!!!! How exciting! I think it's the best feeling to get your first wedding cake - even though you are nervous, I have no doubt you will do wonderfully!

I agree - call around and see what the local going rate is. I usually charge $1.25-$2 per serving, depending on the detail work. I don't feel totally confident in my skills yet, so I usually stick around $1.50 per serving.

You'll have to keep us all posted, and post pictures once you're done!

Thanks for the advice, I think I'll start with basic per serving pricing and go from there. 200 BC roses...myDH just said you're going to be working on this from now until April aren't you?? He's probabally right!

People really don't cringe when you tell them they start at $2.00 and go up from there. Don't under price a wedding cake. They are a lot hard work with delivery and set-up. Good Luck

call around to independent bakers in your area and try to get some pricing information over the telephone. Ask them about both BC and Fondant cakes, gumpaste flowers, basketweave design, whatever else you can think of.

Make a chart, then decide which pricing you would be most comfortable with.

I've recently raised my prices a bit...and I've quote 6 wedding cakes (bc) at $3.50 a serving...I've booked them all. I really think it depends what your local market is like. Don't undersell yourself or your customers will think you offer cheap cake.

It does depend on the market. I think $3.50 is about right. I have booked several at that price. Fondant is additional. Wedding cakes are alot of work because of all the detail on them. Congrats! Make sure to post the picture.

I start my buttercream wedding cakes at $3.50, fondant at $4.00, and 3D/sculpted at $5.50. My basic costs are more than in the USA though!

Thanks to all of you for the advice, I'm definately going to do some research today. I'm sure I'll will have a million more questions as I go through this thing. I'm so glad to have a support network of all of you here at CC! Faye - I'm in Florida too so I bet the market is similar, I'm in North FL though, probabally a bit cheaper than in South FL. Anyway, thanks again for all of the help.

Sorry Faye geography isn't my strong point icon_redface.gif O.K. now I'm meeting her on Saturday to go over ideas. She picked flowers and wants to use fresh flowers on the cake (thank you Lord). The colors are purple and sage and they want a modern look to serve about 100. I'm going to start looking in the galleries, I do have a Wilton wedding cake book but a lot of those seem traditional. I am definately open to any input about the meeting/design/ etc. oh and no I don't have a contract AHHH I have a lot to do by Sat!!

Make sure the flowers she chooses are okay to put on cake. I read in a post some time ago that some flowers are toxic and should not be put on cakes. Maybe a florist can advise you of what is suitable.

I always let a florist deal with fresh flowers! They will put it on or make something you can put on. Since this is your first wedding cake, I would say $1.50-$2 per serving is fair. Try to keep it simple!!
