Should Photos Be Limited?

We have, at this time, close to 90,000 photos in the galleries. Over 30,000 of those are Birthday Cakes. If photos were limited to a number or size, it may help the servers run faster. Would you be willing to limit the photos in your personal gallery if it would help keep the site running faster? I thought that now, since we can delete our own photos, that it could be an option. Most websites have a storage space limit per account, so I thought it could work without being a big deal.

Zmama, remember Heath and Jackie have posted numerous times for people NOT to post pictures in the threads so that the servers can keep their speed...but people won't listen..and they STILL upload pictures into their posts..

asking for opinions, comparisons and just plain showing their work.

Also, do we REALLY need 10 view of the same cake? Unless you're showing me something different on the other side...I don't think that more than one view is needed...

Limiting the number of pictures would make me sad as I love to show off my work and it's easier with 2 computers to have them all in one place..lol

and the size IS limited, remember if they are larger than a certain pixel they cannot be uploaded.

But, we should co-operate with the people that run cc and not load the threads up with photos..

( even though I'm one of those that secretly opens the posts with the little paper clip first!!! lol)

Does this mean that I could have a cake in my favorites disappear when the owner deletes it to make room for another photo? icon_surprised.gif I do understand the need to handle the volume though. icon_eek.gif 90,000?!

Beleive it or not, 90,000 is not a large number. My boyfriend works for a company that has 2.1 million files (site photos, surveys, etc) and are only now considering upgrading their servers from technology that is almost 8 years old. No customer has ever complained of speed that has been the fault of the servers. It has always been them on a slow connection. My Suggestion: Get a high speed internet connection, it'll make cake central life quick and happy.

I'm sure that if this is a concern, Jackie and Heath will handle it appropriately. Over the past year they've done several server upgrades and I've never seen them post any warnings or caveats about limiting photos--other than the fact that those within posts must be smaller than in the gallery.

I use DSL and have no real problems with loading times, speed, etc.

Apparently not said enough- I didn't know and I've been pecking around for a few months now.

I don't think they should be limited..

then that would mean we can no longer show our latest creations..
Did you mean limitng each one of to a certain # of photos submitted ?

I would say no.

This is something that should be decided by Heath and Jackie.

I haven't noticed anything running too slow or had any problems except the minor occurances that are fixed so quickly I don't even have time to get depressed!

If anyone is having issues with pages loading I would say they need to contact their ISP.

I was just thinking about this when organizing photos in my gallery the other day. Some photos were just not necessary for me to keep up. We ask members to purge old photos on the photography site, just wondering if it was an option here, not pushing for it icon_smile.gif

oolala - more of a suggestion to delete old photos, not to stop sharing new ones!

I don't think they should be limited. I love to look at all the pictures to find ideas for my cakes. The galleries are full of inspiration!

The number of photos stored on the server do not have any impact on the speed the website loads.

There is plenty of storage space on the servers.

Believe me, if space were an issue, Jackie and I would not hesitate to change the restrictions.

I am going to lock this thread now as the topic is not an issue.
