In the articles section there is a tutorial about using a Viva towel (no texture or printing) to smooth a crusted buttercream. Here is a link:

There's also a thread called "I share because I care" where melvira explains smoothing crusting BC with a very dense foam paint roller and it works like a charm. It's all I use now and in my opinion works better then the viva method. Just do a search in the foums for her thread. I've used it on most of the recent cakes in my photos if you would like to see the results.

I've been using the foam roller for almost a year now. I must confess that I didn't share the idea because I was afraid everyone would think it was gross. I used to use the Viva method. Now there's no need. The foam roller works so perfectly. The Viva method is amazing. The foam roller method is super amazing!

Okay, so you see.....I can't seem to find this foam roller thingy (btw, I went to college to learn how to talk like that) At least not one that is 6" in roller length. I can only find one small enough to do trim work. That size just isn't big enough for my sheet cakes. Where can I find the right size foam roller? I really want to try this! Of course I don't know if it will give me sharp edges like I can make with the pptwl method.

I got mine at Lowes but Home Depot should have them too as well as Menards.

Cakemommy ~ I got mine at Wal-Mart in the paint department. I have not found one large enough for a sheetcake but the small ones work just as good. Also, I have been able to get nice sharp edges with mine. Just play around with it and you'll see how easy it is.
