It was hot and humid and I had to make a cake to take to a New Year's Eve party. I could not get the buttercream smooth - tried the Viva paper towel method and the hot knife but both did not work. Then the pink was toooooo pink and I hate how the colour turned out. Also, because it was so hot and humid the buttercream was slowly melting!!!!!!! Last but not least, because my kids were fighting and kept interrupting me, I could not concentrate and the piping was horrible and the words were not centered.
I hate buttercream and I hate this cake. icon_cry.gificon_cry.gificon_cry.gif
Thanks goodness it is now a new year and hopefully buttercream and I will become better friends in 2007. icon_rolleyes.gif

BarbaraK ..you make me laugh!!! We have horrible humidity in the summer here and have the same troubles with BC!!! I can relate!

Your cake is very pretty! The flowers and writing is great and the colours look just fine!!! Even if it didn't turn out like you wanted, it is great that it is New Year...out with the old...in with the new!!!

Have a Happy New BC Year!!!

Jane

Thanks for the kind words. The cake was a choc cake and is my special recipe. Everyone loves it and I have to admit it is darn good choc cake!
Not sure how you guys cut your cake but we have a tradition that with a round cake we cut a circle in the centre (heart) of the cake and then slice the outer ring to serve. Makes it easier to cut. That way the heart of the cake stays with whoever the cake if made for. In this case the heart of the cake was the part where the word said Happy. Maybe it is a sign for 2007!
Sorry this is so long!
Cheers and Happy New Year!
Barbara

Barbara, your cake is very nice! I like it, the pink is a very pretty shade!

I had this problem last summer too, with the humidity. The melvira method works well when its humid. I just learned about it and its wonderful. You use a foam (paint) brush to roll the BC.

Happy New Year!

Barbara your cake looks great.. Special chocolate cake recipe aye??? One that you might share with your kiwi neighbour??? icon_lol.gificon_lol.gif

I love your flowers and the shade of pink rocks! You look at your cakes differently to everyone else I do the same thing, so dont worry its really pretty!

I have to agree about the Melvira Method (roller), Ive been starting to have a bit of success using mine, so give it a try.

Happy new year to you! thumbs_up.gif

I am going to have to agree with everyone here, your cake is beautiful! I think the borders look great, flowers look great, and your handwritting looks great! And I just love the colors you went with. Maybe since it gave ya such a hard time is why you are thinking it looks bad? But I gotta tell ya it looks great, Jen!

I know what you mean, I hate BC too. Can't do squat with it unless it's the nasty kind. icon_lol.gif You did well on it; I like the technique you used to ice it and the vines.

Cheer up, buttercream and heat/humidity just don't mix. You did a great job under awful conditions. The cake honestly doesn't look as bad as you think, it's very pretty and your writing is great.

Last year in 42C and high humidity a small fondant urn with flowers slowly changed shape and gently slid off the top of a buttercream birthday cake I'd been struggling to finish. The whole cake was a disaster. icon_sad.gif

Yours is nowhere near a disaster, it's lovely.

Happy New Year.

Val
