http://www.womansday.com/holidayrecipes/5700/christmas-tree-cake.html
the xmas tree cake but was planning to maybe make the same but a little smaller and simplier.i was going to start by baking the cake but then i dont no where to cut it with the diagram-its kinda confusing me :S
should i cut the 4 triangles out but then split one in 2 to go on the sides?
thx xox

The diagram is confusing - the solid lines are not used for anything as far as I can see...and the boxes that are marked "side" are confusing because the sides are triangles...

You cut the cake pieces by using the dotted lines - so you wind up with three pieces (triangles) for the tree and two long rectangles.

The tree pieces are centered on the 9" square cake and the two long rectangles are cut into the six "presents".

This is really a cute and clever cake. Think I'm going to print it out and make it myself next year!

Good luck and be sure to post a picture.

BTW, you can make your own frosting:

Welcome to the group!

Now, when it comes to assembly, my advice is for you, especially since you are so new, to follow the instructions implicitly. As far as decorating, that's another matter - there you can let your imagination run wild. Just make sure that all your decorations are either edible or non-toxic.

thanks for the advice ive learnt the hard way not to change instructions on cakes as they often end in disaster!
im just a little worried that with the xmas tree i will cut where it says 1inch too big or small and the triangular sides wont be the same size so i will have a deformed tree!
and thanks ill be sure to go to the shop and buy lots of smarties or jelly tots to put on the tree and i have lots left over from xmas!
as the best pasrt after all that hard work is to eat a yummy cake!
thx xox
