I was just introduced to satin ice last week by my new cc friend, vixterfsu. It is fondant, and I think you can add something called tylose to make it into gumpaste. Did I get that right , vix?
Anyway, now that I've used satin ice, I will never bother making fondant again! I don't know how well it works for modeling figures and such, but it seems to be smooth and pliable. I'll be experimenting with it more in the future.

Satin Ice is fondant, very good fondant! I've used it a lot but it's too expensive especially when you can make MMF for so much less & it tastes just as good too~ But you still have to try Satin Ice! thumbs_up.gif

I love Satin Ice, it is a fondant but has a very nice taste & you can flavor it as well although I find if I have a really good tasting buttercream or mousse underneath, it absorbs that flavor. MMF is excellent too. I would suggest not using Wiltons fondant, it can put you off for life. I have heard that Caljava's chocolate flavored fondants are good but have not yet tried that.
Hope this helps a little.

I like Satin Ice too....the vanilla flavored kind. I don't, however, like their chocolate fondant. I'm lazy and would rather pay for the Satin Ice than make MMF. If I sold more fondant cakes I'd probably feel differently. I live in ButtercreamLand. LOL!

I believe I live in BC Land too no one is even heard of fondant and the ones that think that do I don't think they ever tasted it before

I have tried MMF and added flavoring which makes it taste even better but had never heard of Satin Ice, where do you purchase it or is there a recipe for it?

Just about every Cake supply shop has Satin Ice now, I have bought it from ISACS & Pfeil & Holing. There is also Satin Fine foods. I don't know how to do a link. I'm not that smart. I must say tho'that I will not buy from pfeil & holing again as their shipping charges were far too high.
Hope this helps.

I love Satin Ice and would rather pay for it than make MMF--I have a such a hard time with it--it always turns out different than the previous time I made it. I guess chalk it up to laziness too! icon_lol.gificon_lol.gif

June, I know pfiel and holing requires a minimum order of $50, so shipping is expensive on top of that? I was thinking of ordering from them, but may reconsider now.

I have ordered Satin Ice from THe Baker's Kitchen and now will probably place my next order with them instead.

Hi Missy,

Yes, they charged me $43+ for shipping because they would not ship by mail only UPS & as I live in Hawaii UPS is very expensive. My order came to $51.+ the $43 for shipping. It might be better for you as you live in NY. I placed the order as they had the best selection of crimpers & I really wanted them. Check with them before you order.

I agree with Misty. I used to make my own fondant and also MMF, they just aren't consistent. For me it is a waste of time and patience. Satin Ice or my favorite Fondx are pricey, but you are guaranteed a success with either brand and they don't taste half bad. I also like Pettinice chcolate fondant, taste is like Tootsie Roll candy.

Shirley, where do you buy Fondx? I would like to try that. Hope you had a great Christmas.

I've not tried it, but I've heard that ChocoPan is an excellent chocolate fondant. For what it's worth... icon_rolleyes.gif

I wanted to buy Satin Ice for the bridal shower I'm making but decided not to, since everyone would probably peel it off. I just decided to use Wilton's and take it off before cutting and serving. Will Wilton's affect the taste at all of the cake?

June -

Considering that you live in HI, I would understand your hesitation to purchase anything that has to be shipped to you, as the cost is probably outrageous!

Rolled Fondant seems to have the same reputation to clients as it does to decorators - we programmed ourselves to think that all rolled fondant tastes like Wilton.

As for SatinIce - I live in BC East, and yet, when I introduced fondant cakes to my family, I rolled out 1/8 inch of SatinIce, applied it to the cake, and they enjoyed it. I wish I could afford a sheeter, so I could apply an even thinner layer. I have had it on a cake, where it was rolled to 1/16 inch thick, and it was perfect. Except for the texture, you could not really taste it.

Hi Theresa,
I roll mine very thin too & don't have a problem with Satin Ice. I love it. It does cost a lot to get it here but if the supplier sends it by mail it is not too bad. I am going to experiment with MMF a lot next year.
