Do you remember what your first post was here on CC? Copy and paste it. Let's see what we were asking. . .

MY FIRST POST ON CC

"Hello, I have several inquiries regarding icing(s) that I'm hoping some of you could answer.

First of all, Wilton has a Whipped Icing Mix that is a powder that you just add ice-cold water to and whip up; does anyone know if there are any other companies that make a product like that one (Wilton's is a very small box)?

Lastly, I was wondering if any of you had any good-tasting icing recipes that could be used for decorating and could be altered for stiff/medium/thin consistencies.

Thank you in advance!"

"I have made only one (1) cake, and never saw this question before...So if it's stupid, please bear with me.
Is there a reason I couldn't use something like a candy stick for a dowel? (Like the straight part of a candy cane) That way even the support would be edible..."
Finally figured out that it would eventually dissolve and collapse the cake...Not good.

Here's my first post! I guess I should have asked another question, because that cake turned out to be my disaster cake!! The pearls were just fine...the rest of the cake was very scary! LOL Here it is:

"I am making a 50th Wedding Anniversary Tiered Cake where I am utilizing the diamond pattern on the sides of the fondant covered layers. I will be applying edible pearls at each diamond point in the pattern. How do I get the edible pearls to stay in place on the fondant? Do I pipe a tiny dot of buttercream in each diamond point to ensure that the pearl with stay in place? See....I am rambling....I need help! LOL!!!"

Hi,
How do some of you decide on the price of your cakes. I have decorated cakes for about two years. Usually for family and friends. I don't charge if they buy all of the supplies. Several people at my daughter's school has found out that I do this; and have been contactig me to do cakes for them. An example; this weekend I am doing three cakes. A stand -up doll cake, a round, & a 1/2 a sheet cake. I quoted all of this for one person at $55.00. I really don't know if I'll make any money off of this. I could use some advice.
Thanks for any help!

Never actually did this one! Have to go back and try it. Made something easier instead icon_biggrin.gif

"I paint, and I decorate cakes for family and friends. My fiance's mother is having her birthday, and I want to paint a copy of her senior picture on the top by hand. How would I go about doing this? I have a new set of brushes, liners mostly, to use. Need to know what to use. Thinking of doing it on a mmf piece and attaching it."

Now I know - thin the flippin' icing! It's too thick, that's why it took the cake with it when I tried to spread it! icon_redface.gif

I did my first post yesterday! I was suposed to be cleaning the house when I wrote this!!

Just spreading a little CC Christmas cheer!

here it is!

Twas the night before Christmas
when all through the house,
not a creature was stirring,
apart from me and my mouse!

The cakes were all iced and decorated with care,
In hopes that in the morning they would still be there;

The CCers were nestled all snug in their beds,
With visions of cakes, and cookies and forums with threads.

And mum with her cookies and I with my cakes,
Had just settled down for a long cake debate

When out in the Lounge there arose such a chatter
I sprang with my m0use to see what was the matter.
Away to the Galleries I flew like a flash
Clicked open the photo and wow oh my gosh!

The smooth buttercream and the Royal Icing snow
Edible glitter and lustre dust gave sparkle below,
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a fondant sleigh and a gum paste reindeer.

With a little advice, so helpful and quick,
I knew in a moment that I could do this!
More rapid than eagles the ideas they came,
And I wished I could thank each member the same,

Now Jackie! now Heath! now MrsMissey and Lisa,
And m0use and stephanie214, MariaLovesCake and ntertayneme
To the top of my list along with flayvuredfun,
I thankyou for keeping this site fun!

Now decorate, decorate, decorate all!

A new technique Im going to try,
If I meet with an obstacle to the forums Ill fly
Then back to the galleries to see what is new
To see what it is next that I will want to do!

And then just by clicking, I found the contest,
So many cakes I think are the best!
As I looked down, I saw the talent around!
Down came my jaw to the table with a bound!

Then there in the spotlight, I saw the famous Doug!
Who stumbled across CC last summer and caught the bug!
Now hes addicted like all of us are,
thanks for your help, your really a star!

I really enjoy spending time with you guys,
Now Im off to my kitchen to bake cakes and pies,
I hope this year my eyes arent too big for my belly,
I dont want to feel like a bowl full of jelly!

A happy and safe holiday I wish for you all,
As I leave you tonight with one thought more,
A quote from the poet ~ Clement Clarke Moore.

"Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night."

ok not to say that i am ARROGANT (or as my kids say "full of myself" but i came on board in september ANSWERING posts roather than humbly ASKING advice....which is not to say that i didn't have lots more questions later!

my first post-

"Have you tried using a plastic scraper? i learned that working in walmart's "bakery" of all places (they should call it a "defrostery" since everything comes in frozen!). For all the misery they put me through in the 9 short months i was there, i did learn how to ice cakes smooth and fast, (and i learned how to write on any size cake).

Anyway we iced heavy with a spatula and scraped smooth with the plastic scraper and i could work it scraping from the edge in and get some nice sharp edges.

then there is also the paper towel method for smothing once it crusted or use a combination of methods, its not impossible, just takes practice and patience, but also remember vines and lace cover a multitude of sins!"

AH to be young and innocent again! he he he

Hi, I was wondering if any one can give me step-by-step instructions on how to make fondant baby booties?

Thanks!"

I've made several but wasn't happy with the uneven edges & just bought the JEM cutters. Actually making them for a real cake for my new grandson's baby shower this weekend.

I was so excited to see this recipe in her book that I bought the book at Borders for $40. I rushed home, got my butter, milk and egg whites out and let them sit til at room temperature.

I was so careful to measure everything properly - I got out my scale and measured out all the flour, sugar, etc. I mixed it carefully, not too much - not too little.

It baked well, but long story short - it tastes horrible! She puts 10 oz packed brown sugar (is there a difference between 10 oz of packed brown sugar and brown sugar? I mean, 10 ounces is 10 ounces!) in the recipe and I found it to be overpowering and to make the cakes a tad dense. They almost tasted like Blondie brownies!

Did I do something wrong or am I not the only one who has had this reaction.

Rachel

Hi,
I'm a newbie here and I'm thinking about starting a business out of my kitchen (it is a seperate from the kitchen that I use to cook dinners ect.)
And I have questions on how cake businesses work.
Right now I'm not looking at doing wedding cakes (it scares me) just birthday, Baby showers and things like that. When people order birthday cakes how do they decide what kind of cake they want? Do they pick out of your portfolio? or do they all ready have a idea of what they want? If they pick out of a portfolio do you end up doing the same cakes over and over again? or do they just use the portfolio for ideas. Do they usually come to the house to pick the cake or do they call? and come to the house to pick up the cakes.
How important do you think it is to have different flavors of cake available?
And Are people usually easy to deal with?
Thank You for your answers to all these questions!

What a fun thread! Here's mine:

Hi everyone,

I am new to this website, and I absolutely love it! There is such a wealth of information here!!!
I need some help ... I am doing a wedding cake at the end of November. The bride wants lilac-colored gumpaste calla lilies on the cake. I'm going to need about 50 of them. I have searched everywhere on the internet, and can't find anyone who sells anything other than white gumpaste calla lilies. Does anyone know of anywhere I can find them? If not, how can I color white ones? I don't have an airbrush, so I was hoping to be able to use luster/pearl/petal dust. Not sure which kind to use, or how to apply it. Dry? Or mixed with clear alcohol? Also, I know that I could make my own, but I don't think I have time to make that many, plus I have never made them before and don't want my first time to be for a wedding cake.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks very much!!! icon_smile.gif
