I use black paste from wilton and it makes it black. Just keep adding it as you are beating it and not at the end or it can get runny and change the consistency of the royal icing. But its not hard to do.

Try americolor super black. I only need a few globs of that and it works great! I have also found that if you let it sit after you color it then it seems to get darker. Good luck!
