I am going to be making some flower cookies for a birthday party in a few weeks and I don't know if rolled buttercream is good to use for them or just royal icing for decorating - or even a combination of the two. I've never made rbc before. I've never made decorated cookies before. I'm using the wilton pan where you can insert the sticks. This is for my little niece's 5th birthday and these will be little favors for the kids. I've read a lot of forums and I just don't know. I just need a little advice.

RBC is tasty, but a bit greasy. It can be a bit tricky to apply because it tends to be stretchy, but it can be done.

You can decorate on the RBC with royal.

The article on baking and decorating sugar cookies is a good place to start. The NoFailSugarCookie -NFSC recipe is well liked but it can require a few more drops of liquid, if the batter is too dry.

I have used the no-fail sugar cookie recipe and no I get asked about when I am making more cookies.
As for decorating I use Royal icing because it dries quickly. Michaels has a couple books on decorating cookies that are done mostly in fondant. Maybe one of these will be a little help.

I just recently made my first batch of sugar cookies and as a beginner I would reccomend the No Fail Sugar Cookie recipe on this site. I add 2 tsp of vanilla and 2 tsp of almond extract to mine and they are good with no icing. But I used Tobas glaze also from this site. I thought it complimented the cookie very well with out over powering the cookie. It was also easy to work with, although i strongly suggest using a sqeeze bottle instead of bag. It gives you more control as the glaze is thin.
