I made my first fondant bow a week ago. Put it on top of the cake yesturday. I was in the other room hear a KURPLUNK, one loop fell off, I used gumpaste to put it back on. An hour or so later, KURPLUNK a different one fell off. I reattached. About an hour later ANOTHER one fell off....by the time all was said and done 5 of the loops came off from different sides. The bow was not bothered, its been sitting in the same spot for a week. I had to use toothpicks to prop up underneath to try and give support. Were my loops to heavy???? Did I not use enough or to much gumpaste?? Is my bow to big? Has this happened to anyone else? There is a pic of the bow in my photos, should be first pic. Its the baby shower cake. This was a couple of hours before it fell apart. icon_cry.gif

Sounds like you didn't put enough 'glue' on to hold the loops &/or they are too heavy. Next time try making the loops a bit thinner - not in width of loop but in how thick the gumpaste is.

Thanks for your reply...I will try what you suggested. I was afraid to make them to thin due to them breaking off...evidentally being to thick is just as bad.

hmmm so you originally attached the loos w/ gumpaste and then as they fell you re-attached w/ gumpaste?

I've only made one bow (in my photos) I attched my loops w/ melted white candy chips that I found in the craft isle at wal-mart I didn't have any problems.

Yes as they fell off I just reattached with gumpaste..wasn't to sure what else to do. I had to have the cake to the lady at noon. I pray they stay on for her!!! She still had to transport to the baby shower. Two car trips with a wobbly bow.....

Well I hope the bow stayed put ok for the lady to transport it! BTW..I looked at the cake it is gorgeous!!!

I would just say maybe next time make the loops a little thinner & adhere them w/ melted candy chips or RI as someone else suggested.

I wire each loop, then just stick them where they should go.

This is a good idea but is work extra..unless it is a huge bow or a side bow y never had to wire my bows..But It would work too..
Thank you mommak for the comment... icon_biggrin.gif

I put the wire in as I'm making the loops and honestly the entire process of cutting the wire, bending a hook and putting it in between the ends of the loop takes maybe - maybe - 20 seconds. Then I have virtually no assembly time for the bow, so in the long run it's a time saver. And its easier. And the loops do what I want them to.

Leah is a Pastry Chef (note the chef's coat!icon_smile.gif and professional baker, I take any advice she has on any topic with a lot of seriousness! I recently bought a chef's coat at an outlet just to make myself feel like a real pastry chef . . . someday I will get to Pastry school in SF, even if I'm 80 when I finally do it! Grandma Moses started painting in her 80s, so I figure I've got a chance!!! icon_biggrin.gif

So sorry this happened to you! I used to use royal icing to "glue" my loops together, and one day I was too lazy to make a batch just to use as glue...so I melted down the candy melts, and now I love this method SO much! It REALLY holds it together so much better!

I been working doing wedding cakes for 10 years..never had a problems with bows either....I hope people dont think i was saying anything bad about leiah...I respect her work..all I said there are plenty of ways of doing things..u use what works for you and I even say is great the wires but if you don't have them available royal icing is fine..I am not here to talk bad about anyone or anybodys work...working with cakes is fun and hard and everybody has different ideas...
Through my work I never thought I was perfect..I work on what I do everyday to make it better from ideas from everybody here in CC an outside of here.. I study and keep learning every single day cause new tecqniques keep coming out..Doing cakes is a never ending learning experience...And I love to listen to everybodies ideas all the time..It makes me grow everyday not only as a better decorator to teach my students but as a person..sorry if anyone misunderstood the comment
