Can anyone direct me to an article on how to make fondant black? I know I've seen stuff in the forums before but I am having trouble finding it. Or if someone wants to just tell me how to do it that would be great too. Thanks

Hi there,

I make black fondant by adding Americolor super black to regular fondant. It will become quite sticky as you have to use quite a bit, so I add a little more icing sugar.

I tried with Wilton black and it just went grey.

I had to use nearly the whole bottle of wilton black and you have to give it a little time for the color to set up.

Whatever you do, make sure you wear gloves! I learned the hard way from making red fondant, I had pink hands for almost 2 days!!!

Buy it! Satin Ice makes pre-colored black fondant. It's a bit stickier than white - probably because of all the coloring they had to add - but if you keep a powdered sugar puff handy, it's a heck of a lot easier than making your own!

Depending on what you want the fondant for, either to cover a cake or just for decorations, if you make the mmf just tint you marshmellows black after melting them then use chocolate confectioners sugar, or if this is not available to you, use the normal confec sugar but add some cocoa powder...

i can buy chocolate icing sugar (confectioners) here in australia and i use this and get a good black mmf...

or start with chocolate ready made fondant and knead your black into that.....

I believe in the other posts people had suggested either using cocoa powder instead of all the extra confect. sugar and then a little of the Americolor Black. Also, I haven't tried this, but think it would work, make chocolate MMF and then add the black coloring.

I made both red and black last night. I just colored with the Wilton Fondant, it was sticky and messy but it worked fine. The black came off my hands more easily than the red.

Sorry, I meant to say I used Wilton coloring, I made the mmf fondant on this site, the colors came out fine.
